OT: Quotes in Signatures

Post by cajapato » Mon Dec 03, 2007 11:09 am

I'm not a regular poster in here but I do lurk and read quite a bit. There is a lady in here with a signature quote that struck me and I never wrote it down. Maybe somebody can help me.
It was along the lines of us "doing the same thing over and over yet expecting different results".
Trust me, that is way paraphrased on my part but it may ring a bell with somebody.
Thanks.
Tom

Don't know who the original poster is, but that's the definition of Insanity: "Doing what you've always done and expecting different results".

Thanks, Jasper. I had found that on a google search. She had a little different take on it that I liked. I don't even remember her username to look it up that way.

That would be "sharon1965".

She has a thread a little farther down the page (as I write this) entitled:
"you know you've gotten used to cpap when..."

Her quote is:

"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got..."

...........

"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got..."
...

That is a neat quote but there is a side of it that is very untrue. In business management, we keep a very close eye on the most successful managers. We know that over time they will develop a strong propensity to keep on doing what made them successful. In the meantime the world is changing and what made them successful no longer works. This is one reason we reorganize and move them to other jobs. We move ourselves around too.

You guys can keep on doing what you've always done to get what you always get...

Now me, I've done so much for so long with so little that I'm now qualified to do absolutely everything with nothing...

Insanity quote

Post by kteague » Mon Dec 03, 2007 6:39 pm

I'm guessing that quote originated out of a desire for an improved result rather than maintaining a positive - who knows! Not necessarily a Dr. Phil proponent, but it seems to be what he is saying with his quote, "And how's that working for you?" Mention of this quote is a timely reminder for me. Need to change things up if I'm going to break this plateau in my treatment. It's that daggone sleep hygiene still.

I think Dr. Phil stole that from John Boy and Billy, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Boy_and_Billy.
Hoyt and Delbert are John Boy's friends, a pair of rednecks who share a trailer in the mobile-home park known as "Casa de Double Wide". Delbert has never actually been heard on the show, but John Boy frequently calls Hoyt and is told a story about some terrible calamity that's going on in Delbert's life. Usually this involves Delbert's new girlfriend of the week. When asked by John Boy how something went for Delbert, the answer is invariably the distinctly pronounced catchphrase: "NOT TOO GOOD." (Played by Billy James)
These guys crack me up. If you have never heard them, you should seek them out, http://www.thebigshow.com/00webcast/webcast.html.

I always read that quote as an explanation of why you have to change if you want things to get better.

Personal change, changing deep ingrained habits of behavior (and thought) is one of the most difficult things there is. We always want the other person to change.

I found this book, by Paul Watzlawick fantastic:

Change; Principles of Problem Formation and Problem Resolution
