Slightly OT - Sleep disorder at it worst

Post by kteague » Fri Nov 09, 2007 5:28 am

We often talk about other sleep disorders besides OSA, so here's a report from last night's local news that caught my attention. A passerby exiting the highway stopped his car and ran to pull a man off a woman in a grassy area along a 4 lane thoroughfare overnight. This area is not pedestrian friendly. News first said the woman was known to police, so my first thought was maybe the passerby rescued someone not looking to be rescued. Then the report finished by saying the victim was a local college student known to police because of the previous times they had found her sleepwalking overnight.

Glad I didn't get the sleepwalking problem from Dad. Sure got enough other sleep disorders,

KT

Wow. How awful.

You're right, Kathy, we do tend to zero in on OSA and not think about the many (70+) other sleep disorders there are, most of which don't have anything to do with sleep disordered breathing.

Though it is amazing how many things sleep apnoea can do. I was watching a tv program the other day where a guy was having sex in his sleep. AHI 14. So they gave him a pill to keep him out of deeper stages of sleep. I'm sitting there going, "Uh, why not just let him breathe?" but oh well.

I'm a programmer Jim, not a doctor!

Update on story

Post by kteague » Mon Nov 12, 2007 7:07 am

Morning news says the offender is mentally ill (paranoid schizophrenic, untreated since he left a group home months ago). Unfortunately he was also being treated for AIDS. To say this is a nightmare for this young lady is an understatement.

Just wish all sleep disorders would be given the attention they deserve. My father was a sleepwalker, and in this day and age, the authorities would have probably removed us from the home after some safety compromised incidents. He mostly acted out his bad dreams. My mother must have had nerves of steel - certainly was a saint.
