Good pillow to place under neck for a side sleeper.

Post by stevoreno » Thu Nov 01, 2007 12:16 am

Can anyone recommend a good neck roll pillow or anykind of a neck pillow to put under your head when you attempt to sleep on your side for extra support? Something comfortable?

I use a memory foam pillow that has the "cradle" in it and use the higher side to support my neck so don't need anything else for support.

I use a feather pillow and its great. That way I can squish it the way I like it and where I want it. It is also a Kingsize pillow.

I ordered 2 new latex foam bed pillows from J.C. Penney recently which are labeled as having "medium" support and I'm having trouble getting use to them. My old latex pillows were "cough", "cough" years old but they were well broken in and very comfortable to sleep on but it was time for a new set. I also had a designer neck roll pillow from J.C. Penney which was super comfortable but after a few years of use I finally had to pitch it last month.

Hopefully I'll find a good replacement soon for that neck roll pillow because the square throw pillow which I'm currently attempting to sleep on while on my side isn't at all comfortable; it's a beautiful pillow but it certainly isn't comfortable. Thanks to those of you who posted and you have a nice day you hear.

I also use feather pillows, I use 2 and they can be squished into any shape. That has been the only thing that has worked to support my neck. Long before Apnea, i had surgery on my shoulder blade and it messed up the muscles in my shoulder and neck and the feather pillow are the only thing I can find that I can form to fit under my neck.
Hope you find something that works...If you go to linens and things or Bed Bath & Beyond they have tons of different pillows, rolls, feather, tempurpedic, etc.

I just got to thinking -- now don't make any jokes cause as my husband would say now we are in trouble --

I was in Walgreens earlier in the week and they had some memory foam pillows that were marked down to $2.01 (I purchased 2 of them and wish I would have purchased a couple of more). I purchased 1 "log roll" one to use under my knees when my back hurts and another that is a neck support for sleeping in a more upright position. It is the circle one with the neck cut out. I don't know what it is called and hope you know what I am talking about.

You might try at Walgreens in your area and see if they are marked down and if you could at least use one temporary until you found something better.

I use king size pillows and it is hard to get some of the pillows in the king size. Due to allergies I can not use a down pillow and the fiberfilled ones go flat to soon (I replace them about every 6 months or so). I haven't tried the latex foam ones out. Keep us posted on them.

Me too, but my shoulders are quite wide so I place another very flat pillow under the memory foam one when I'm on my side. Otherwise the cradle doesn't reach all the way to my neck/head.

My pillows are fairly thick and not the thinner ones that Wal-Mart sells. I purchased mine at an outlet store and think they were Tempurpedic brand but can't swear.

When an aunt of mine found out I was trying to find a replacement pillow for the old neck roll pillow I had to pitch last month she drove over from Mobile one day with a bag from Wal-Mart which contained a horseshoe shaped pillow filled with something that felt like the filling material used in beanie(sp?) babies several years ago; the pillow also had a vibrator gizmo which fit inside the neck part of the pillow.

I tried to sleep on it one night without the vibrator gizmo but it was just too soft. I keep it on my bed just in case the aunt would ever stop by again to let her think I was still using it. I wouldn't want to hurt her feelings; it was a nice gesture on her part along with the hummingbird cake she made and brought over for me but I can't imagine anyone trying to sleep on that kind of pillow; it was just too soft but the hummingbird cake was mighty good. Thank you for your post.

The ones I purchased at Walgreens are nice foam pillows and not the squishy kind.

I bet your aunt was using that one somewhere besides her neck.

My Papillow arrived today and I will give it a try tonight.

Why rooster, whatever do you mean?

I use a foam pillow for my main pillow, then I have this very-sparsely-filled feather pillow for on top. I can easily poke and stuff it wherever it helps to support my head while I'm on my side, so that my nasal pillow doesn't get pushed on. It works great.

I swear by my papillow!! Google it ! I am strictly a side sleeper;I use my papillow on top of a regular pillow.Neck aches/pains have disappeared. Worth the investment. I just ordered a new one matter of fact.
