CPAP treatment by airport

Post by tillymarigold » Fri Oct 26, 2007 10:32 am

I'd like to get a list going of every airport's current policy regarding CPAP as well as we can, with a date of travel and how the CPAP was handled.

United States
ABQ (Albuquerque International Sunport, Albuquerque, NM) 10/12/07: Took out the CPAP and put it in a bin with the bag containing the rest of my equipment and sent the bin through the X-ray machine. Screener pulled the bin off the belt and handed it to another screener. The other screener carried it to a small table off to the side. I stood in front of the table as he swabbed it and sent the swab through the test machine. He then handed me the whole bin. He never physically touched the CPAP machine itself or the cloth that was used to swab it (his machine attached and detached the cloth from the handle automatically).
JFK (John F. Kennedy, Jr., International Airport, New York, NY) (Sept 29, 2007): I took the machine out of the bag, it went through xray with no comment. It wasn't swabbed or handled. (Sept 29, 2007)
LAS International Terminal (McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas, NV) (Sept 3, 2007): I took the machine out of the bag, the inspector was familiar with it (he too, has OSA), it went through the xray. No swabbing or handling.
RDU (Raleigh-Durham International Airport, Raleigh, NC) 10/22/07: Took out the CPAP and put it in a bin with the bag containing the rest of my equipment. Sent it through the X-ray machine. That was all. Screener told me that because I'd removed it from the bag, it didn't need to be swabbed.

International:

I suspect this list will only be partially useful as the regulations are haphazardly implemented even at the same airport let alone between them. It would be interesting to find out though...

Airports and Cpap

Sorry I don't have exact dates (becasue I travel too much)

Heres what I have experienced in the last two months:

MKE - General Mitchell Int. - Milwaukee
Swabs machine everytime - Complained about humidifier being left in the bag as it's the most dangerous part! This only happened once and when I questioned the TSA running the test on the pap she said it's the operators call if the humidifier looks dangerous and needs to be out of the bag. This happened once in about 10 pass thru's.

SFO - Sanfrancisco - Swabbed and tested - One out of two trips they just xrayed and didn't Swab test.

MSP - Minneapolis - Swabbed down and Xray'ed every time.
in the last two months

BNA - Nashville - Swabbed once of two trips other just xray.

MEM - Memphis - Swabbed and xrayed the two times I've bee through

MSY - New Orleans - Same Swabbed and Xrayed about 1/2 the time, the other half xray only.

Flew through others but never left the secure area Layover only....

Cheers....

airport security

I don't think it is the airline that counts, they seem to allow medical equiment in addition to hand luggage and a purse, it's the security people.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND November

airline checkin said security would only let me thru with one bag, I continued with 3 combined into 2 as it was impossible to get 3 into one, and I was told by security that I had to combine them or ship one through in the hold. AS i was only at the entrance at this point I asked for my passport back, went back out and found an airport person who was handing out plastic bags to put your makeup or whatever into, told them my story and one of them escorted me to the "invitation only" entry to security and gates. Told him my sad story, he phoned whoever for confirmation and i was allowed through with 2 bags. My next move would have been to buy a bigger bag as I don't think that security care what size your bag is, that seems to be an airline "thing". so you just have to be prepared to juggle the bags it seems. whacko!

no one swabbed anything, but I did, on another occasion, have my purse swabbed- only because I forgot to pick the darned thing up and dashed off without it I think.
