smart card
The guy at my DME supplier suggested that I unplug the machine before removing the card. I don't necessarily believe him--I really don't think the machine will care as long as I'm not using it at the time.
However, having heard of enough others forgetting to reinsert their cards before hosing up for the night, I unplug my machine to remind me that the card is out.

The card are plug-n-play so to speak. removing are inserting it won't hurt it. I use one (same type of card) at work and have no problem with it either..

I have everything hooked up to a surge protector. I turn that off every day anyway, so when I take out my card, the machine has no power to it.

Here's a related question: Can you take the card out as soon as you wake up and turn off the cpap? Or might you lose data that way? In other words, I'm wondering if the data is recorded on the card immediately or if perhaps there is a delay between the time the machine is turned off and when the data is recorded to the card. The reason I think there might be a delay is because I think I've noticed a delay between turning off the cpap and seeing the lcd data update itself. As a consequence, I've always waited at least half an hour before removing the card just as a precaution.

Re: smart cards
We use software made by Respironics:muufinrae wrote:What all do u have to have to be able to read the smart cards?
Encore Pro (hard to find)
or
Encore Viewer (easy to find)
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... e-1.0.html
Either of those will do the same job as far as showing you the downloaded data from the Smart Card.
In addition to that software you need the right card reader. Cheapest place I've seen the correct card reader for sale is a Hong Kong online store. This is the card reader:

Before you think about investing in that software and card reader, be sure your machine is one of the Respironics models that will give detailed data, not just hours of use.
For example, Respironics machines with "Plus" in the name do NOT give full data. Not even if they have a Smart Card stuck in them, not even if they are an M series Plus, and not even if they have C-Flex.

Pulled mine once by mistake when it was running at 4 A.M. after an alarm went off on my machine, wiped out the nights data but all the previous nights data was still there.

Static Electricity
As with any type of portable flash storage, be aware of static electricity build up. As winter comes to the northern hemisphere, dry heat in our homes will create lots of built up static electricity. Even hard plastic can conduct a little bit.
Just as a precaution, touch something metal before inserting or pulling out your smart card, and never ever touch the gold connectors.
