Leaks and Nasal Mask

Post by Buddhah » Mon Oct 15, 2007 7:07 am

I wear a nasal mask and have very low leaks and use a Resmed Autoset Spirit. How do you know if you open your mouth to breath? Does the leaks increase?

In my experience if you try to breathe thru your mouth, its gonna wake you up!

HOWEVER, if your lips are parting even slightly, air can leak thru them, often just one spot (I call that "lip flutters").

In answer to your question, yes, air leak thru your mouth raises your leak rate and if a high enough or often enough leak occurs it can reduce or negate your xPAP therapy. These newer machines are pretty good at compensating for leaks. My straight CPAP set at 8 cms will occasionally hit as high as 9.6 cms of pressure when I have a relatively high leak rate. I can tell by my AHI how well it was able to handle that high leak.

Opening your mouth does not necessary cause a leak tho. I've somehow unconsciously learned to open my mouth w/o leaking. I've done it when I'm awake and aware. Heck, I can even talk relatively decently w/my xPAP running now! I sure couldn't when I first started xPAP!!!!!
