Why are some forums in denial?

Post by sleepycarol » Sat Oct 06, 2007 2:46 pm

I have been following some threads on another forum and am so glad that cpaptalk is the one that dispenses invaluable advice on how to get the most good out of our cpap therapy.

One of the threads I have read is http://www.talkaboutsleep.com/message-b ... hp?t=22231
and am so disappointed that they seem to downplay the importance of cpap therapy and call it a temporary fix.

I DO NOT want surgery to correct this problem. I want a viable means of treating my severe OSA and my method of doing this is with CPAP.

Thanks for all of YOUR support!!

I agree. I don't want to go through painful surgery and then end up having to use the CPAP anyway. That isn't even taking into account the complications one might experience with the surgery.

Wow, what strange attitudes. I know at least 6 people who have had the surgerys and only one is still off CPAP and I am not sure he really should be but he is stuborn. Most that have had the surgery say it helped for a while but not enough to get off CPAP. All but one said that after several years it is almost like they did not have the surgery.

Like sleepycarol i am glad I found this sight and not that one. Their attitude could mess with your head.

Well, you can tell how "popular" the other forums are (or are NOT) by the amount of participation they (don't) have.....and a lot of that is due to their restrictive nature and the heavy hand of their forum administrators.

One thing I've observed on the ASAA board is the higher number of "whiners" that they seem to get over there. The "I HATE THIS!", "I CAN'T DO THIS!", "This therapy SUCKS!" type of posts/threads.

TAS is a "ghost town".

HOORAY for CPAPTALK!

Den (not being partial or anything.....)

TAS is a online DME supplier as well so I doubt that attitude is the principal attitude of the majority of posters at their forum. On the other hand, it is a very restrictive forum. And consequently no where as near as busy as here nor even as busy as the apneasupport forum.

Back in July, when I first started on CPAP, I had little information, so I went exploring on the web.

I signed up for most of the boards on the forum, but quickly discovered that this was the one that had the most valuable information, the most positive people, and the best support system.

I've never posted on the other forums, and never visit them, unless a someone from this site references one of them.

In addition, some of the members on other forums have chosen to vilify this forum, implying that dangerous advice is dispensed here. In my view, they're really sending a message that my sleep treatment is too complicated for me to play a part in.

As someone who works for an association of medical providers (I train and place people in medical clinics), that goes against everything I know about the cutting edge of medicine. Most Primary Care providers are consistently moving toward a Patient-Self Management model, in the belief that patients can and need to take responsibility, in partnership with their doctor, for their own health.

It was unbelievable to me when I discovered that this doesn't appear to be the case in the treatment of sleep apnea.

That's why I'm sticking around here.

I signed on with the TAS board as well as this one and a couple of others when I was diagnosed. I've definitely made much more a presence at this one than any other. You're right about the TAS board on both accounts of negativity toward xPAP therapy and on being more restrictive. I posted a topic or two there and got minimal to no replies. Things are much better on this side of the fence for sure! This board has some of the nicest, funniest, most helpful people I've met!

So weird... I found this board about 3 days into my therapy, desperate for help. I never even found the other forums. I instantly recognized this as a "familiar" environment, from having joined other forums for my crazy costuming hobby. I could see full transparency and that made me feel at home. When I heard about the other forums, I looked at them, and saw forums that were private games played by their moderators. I don't feel comfortable with that, so I didn't ever log on and play there.

I'm just lucky this way. As I said in another thread - lucky cpap, unlucky in love.

LOL,
Babs

Its not my favorite forum by any stretch of the imagination but I do not see the negativity towards CPAP at the TAS forum you all refer to. It appears to be pretty much just one or two regular posters there, MrMango being one, who can be very negative toward CPAP.

Maybe its just my rose-colored glasses.

While I do see a bit more whining and "I can't do this" at the apneasupport forum, I think it is because members are limited in what information they can share w/such posters. Certainly there are good members there trying to help.

They just can't begin to compare w/the free exchange of information and assistance provided by our members here and allowed by our host.

Me? The crochety ole witch? The one who is so disgusted w/and rants about the medieval mindset of so many in the medical profession? The one who hates her local CPAP DME supplier? The one who rants about anything less than a fully data capable machine being provided to first time xPAPpers? The one who condemns sleep "professionals" who allows their patients to be provided w/anything less than a fully data capable xPAP and wants to drum those incompetents out of the sleep profession???

Gee, thanks, JA!
