Mask setting on cpap

Post by Quilterbmb48 » Fri Oct 05, 2007 12:46 pm

Who knew!

After reading the manuel that came with my Cpap machine, I learned that there are different settings for different masks. When I purchased the Cpap, I also purchased a mask (a different mask than the one given to me at the sleeping lab) but I used the lab given mask. After reading the manuel I realized the programed setting was not for the mask I was presently using, but for the mask I purchased with the Cpap.... It does make a difference. Last night I changed the setting (after talking to the cpap provider) and what a difference. The pressuger was stronger and will hopefully benefit my therapy.

Plugged ears and one nostral being stopped up is a present issue, but has not kept me from using my Cpap.

The journey continues-began 9/21/07.

Glad you got that sorted out, Bettina. That's the kind of thing the DME who supposedly gets paid extra for cpap setups should have told you. "Mask selection" is important enough that the DME shouldn't have left it to chance as to whether the user would ever see that in the owner manual.

Incidentally, resmed machines are the only ones I know of that require the user to fiddle with a "mask selection" setting. Other manufacturers design their machines to handle leak rate calculation without having to know what mask (or type of mask) is being used.

Good thing you looked for more information on your own.

Hey, RG. The DME "did" set her Resmed Mask Selection for the mask she bought from the DME. She was using the mask the sleep lab gave her when she found that in her manual.

By the way: check your PMs (horses)

Does the mask setting on the Resmed machines affect therapy (e.g., pressure delivered), or is it strictly for calculation purposes? I thought it was the latter.

You're right, Slinky. I should'a read more closely.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Resmeds - but - I strongly suspect its only done that way to make things easy for the sleep docs (and encourage them to use and script Resmed masks). Resmed probably recognizes a lot of "sleep" docs don't really understand the data these CPAPs provide.
