Day 2 with poligrip strips

Post by Sleepdeprived » Thu Oct 04, 2007 6:23 am

Lowest leak ever. Much better than no preventative and lower even than when I was mouth taping

I cant imagine the strips would provide A better seal than taping but they appear to work well and are an excellant alternative to mouth taping

BTW I also had my lowest AHI ever .5

lowest vibratory snores (snore index) .9

lowest total time in apnea 18 sec

matched lowest apnea duration 9 sec

Yowzer

Excellent!

BTW I appreciate your followups because it will encourage others to try what we have used successfully.

I know we are often repeating information we got from the site ourselves, but new users will benefit just the same.

Good for you, sleepdeprived! Whatever it takes to keep it shut.
I'm glad it's working for you. You may add a tough of teflon tape from time to time, but maybe not. Keep us posted.

That is good to hear. Polygrip strips work for me too. In fact, with the use of the strips, I find that a chin strap is no longer required, which makes sleeping much more comfortable.

Hi Skybird

That's great

I was considering a chin strap also. After last night I will put it on hold

glad to hear it's working for you! I have finally tossed my chin strap and think my mask fits better now without it. The poligrip strips have been the answer for me as well.

I've been trying the Poligrip strips for 2 nights. My leak line is much bumpier due to blowing out (blowfish effect) than with tape. I think that this is because I'm only using one strip and it doesn't cover the whole length of my mouth. Tonight I'm going to cut one lengthwise to cover the whole length of my mouth and see if that works any better. I also have some regular poligrip and may try that again.

I do like the way it feels better than the mouth taping, though I don't mind the mouth taping much at all. The Poligrip just feels more natural.

OK, last night it worked really well for me. Here's what I did:

1. Cut the poligrip strip in half lengthwise.

2. Cut one of the narrow lengthwise strips in half so I had 2 short pieces.

3. Licked my lips and positioned the longer of the 3 strips in the center of my bottom lip. The short pieces I put on either side. Pressed my lips firmly together for about 15 seconds.

4. Put on my mouthband over the whole thing. The mouthband prevents blowfish problems.

My leak line was perfectly straight and nearly flat. On previous nights when I used the poligrip strip but didn't use it all the way across my mouth I had big time leaks. My leak rate with the Headrest was 18 last night (complete mouth sealing). The previous night it was 27 (partial mouth sealing).

My AHI last night was 0.3. On the previous night it was 1.4. As long as I get that leak line straight and wear my backpack, my AHI is usually under 1.0.

I found a much simpler way to get full width coverage. I cut the strip on a shallow angle which created two wedge shaped pieces. I slid the two pieces wider and the tapered areas together. So a skinny width in the middle, but tight sticky from edge to edge. It was so good that a sneeze which came from nowhere blew my Comforlite II clean out of my nose. What a wakeup!

I tried it, but it was hard to position. I'm trying it again tonight.

I've tried the strips a few times, but have to say I'm a little freaked out with my mouth sealed closed, even though it's never held through a whole night. I also hate getting the gunk off afterwards. I have a lot of sinus congestion, probably don't get enough air through my nose only. I'll get a headache after about 10 minutes, but did manage to get to sleep a couple of times with my CL2 and mouth glued shut. The sinus rinse hasn't helped, and neither did Flonase. I still haven't been able to get the Quattro to seal around my eyes, and when I lie on my left side, it digs into my right cheek. Actually, it feels like it's digging into my face all the time, even on my back. So now my mission is to research which mask I want to try when insurance will buy me another in January.
