When will I feel rested???
When will I feel rested???
I have had my CPAP machine for 2 weeks. My main symptom was wanting to take naps and pushing the snooze button for HOURS before finally getting out of bed. I was never one to fall asleep watching tv, etc. My sleep study showed 65 resperitory events per hour, but my oxygen level held up pretty well through it all. My 2 week checkup showed that I was using my machine correctly.
I would like to hear from CPAP users - how long will should I expect to wait before I notice decent results? weeks or months?
thanks.

Wulfman...
What equipment are you using? Particularly your mask. If it's a nasal mask, you might be leaking therapy air out your mouth while you're sleeping.....which if this is the case, would be negating your therapy.
On the other hand, it takes some weeks or months to start recovering. You didn't get this overnight and it won't reverse itself (even with good therapy) overnight.
Baby steps....

When will I feel better?
Faith123 - One question comes to my mind... When you were told you were using the machine correctly, what did they mean? They could have meant you were being compliant in how many hours you use the machine. Or it could mean you have a machine that reports data that actually shows if your treatment is effective in stopping events.
If they were commenting only on your compliance, that doesn't let you know if you have any pressure issues etc. Sometimes it is hard to know whether something has gone wrong (machine settings in error, etc.) or if it's just the adjustment phase.
Most don't have a miraculous turnaround, but change does come. The more diligent we are as cpap users, the more opportunity we give our bodies to recover.
As long as we haven't arrived yet, we have more to look forward to, right? (I keep telling myself that.) Welcome to the forum.

Its not at all clear what results you are looking for or what results you have had to date from the initial two weeks?!?faith123 wrote:I would like to hear from CPAP users - how long will should I expect to wait before I notice decent results? weeks or months?
Can you please tell us more!

slow recovery
i really appreciate everyone's interest and input!!
one person asked what I meant by "the machine was working correctly". What I meant was that they downloaded info and the assigned pressure (9) was being maintained all the time.
someone else asked what results I was looking for. I'm looking forward to the day when I don't want to take a nap, or if I do take a nap, that I can take a "power nap" not a 4 hour nap.
I try to be realistic, but also heard so many first hand experiences of INSTANT relief from the CPAP machine. It helps to hear others reassure me that it may take a couple months to see the benefits for me..... so if others are reading this and a slow recovery, please share your story.

Re: slow recovery
That might take a while, depending on exactly how your individual physiology has been reacting to years of partial sleep deprivation. You should wait at least a couple of months before becoming concerned that your initial treatment approach may not be delivering your sought for outcome.faith123 wrote:I'm looking forward to the day when I don't want to take a nap, or if I do take a nap, that I can take a "power nap" not a 4 hour nap.
Sleep Disordered Breathing isn't a single set of symptoms and treatments, there is a spectrum in both the symptoms/causes and the treatment approaches, so there are no specifically guaranteed outcomes.... though it is clear statistically that persisting with treatment will produce much better outcomes eventually, though it may take some time and adjustment to the treatment approach to achieve that.
So hang in there!
Cheers,
Bill

Faith, I've only been at this a little longer than you. Just over a month. I can say I've only had a few days that felt like after my first sleep study. It was split so second half of the night I was hooked up to the machine. I still have to go in for my official Titration because they weren't able to adequately find a pressure for me that took care of everything and they need to reevaluate my O2 since mine was still below 90 at a pressure of 20/16 on BiPAP. Overall I have fairly decent days and bad days. I've already been through 3 masks the latest a loaner OptiLife from my hospital DME to try and find something that works for me. Of course over about the last 2 weeks it's been all bad days, but then I've been really sick, and have been lucky if I could use my BiPAP for an hour or two if at all. Now of all things I think I've begun to mouth leak...
