Scared to death and want to cry.

Post by skits » Wed Sep 19, 2007 10:27 am

Two nights ago I did my second sleep study using a cpap mask. I found the whole face (whatever it's called) worked the best for me. It's bulky, but I didn't get the panic attack I got with just the nose mask (when I opened my mouth).

I love this site. It's helped in just the hour I've been searching through it. I am holding back tears. My anxiety is at an all time high. I'm hoping it won't take too long to get my machine. I'm looking for a newbie to walk down the path together and compare notes (and fears). Anyone out there that's in my learning curve?

Welcome to the forum, Skits. I sure am sorry you are going thru so much anxiety and certainly hope you get your equipment quickly. Good to hear that the full face mask worked for you during your titration and that is caused less anxiety than the nasal cushion mask.

I have almost a year on you since I started CPAP therapy 09 Oct 06. I have a lousy CPAP DME supplier so I'm REALLY looking forward to November when the CPAP becomes MINE, all MINE, no more rental!!!

We were ALL new at this in the beginning of our therapy. It's how you handle the learning curve and how much knowledge you choose to acquire about it that makes the difference. Just learn to accept the hand you were dealt and go on with it.
After awhile, it becomes second nature and part of your nightly routine.

Piece of cake!

Fortunately you found this site very early. You will find lots of tips and advise and fellow Paper's.
I have been on CPAP for six months and I got use to it quickly. I am very happy to have found the problem.

Skits - I'm only a few days ahead of you in that last night was my first night with my own cpap. However, if you've only got an hour of reading on here in then I'm way ahead of you there. I'd say I've got a good 20+ hours in reading old posts on here in the last couple of weeks. It has been extremely helpful, and guided me through finding a decent DME and getting a great machine. Now I'm starting to read more on USING the machine... Bottom line, this website seems to be the best source of info you'll find to help you wade through this!

skits,
I did my titration last Friday. Iam waiting for my doc to contact me.
I am anxious too, more about the cost than anything else. I HAVE to do
this, I HAVE to make it work.
I slept for at least 4 solid hours, where I don't remember dreaming, or
even moving, I just slept. That night on the machine compared to nights
in the past lets me see what I am missing. So I KNOW that the therapy
works.
It's going to be trail and error, learning what works and what doesn't. It
won't happen quickly, but it will happen.
I am determined it will work. How bad do you want it?

for me putting the mask on produced less anxiety than stopping breathing several dozen times while trying to fall asleep. That was hard to get over also, but I finally had to relax and allow the machine to keep my airway open while falling asleep.

And that is what drives me to put the mask on every night, if I don't wear the mask I'll have those sleep on-set events one right after another. Even the lowest pressure keeps those at bay.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Skits....I'm not very far behind you. The thing I had the most difficulty with was the masks. Every time I looked at photos of masks I got more and more anxious about it (I've got several anxiety disorders already, not helping) I was afraid of looking like a freak. But now that I"ve been on it for 2 months I own 3 masks--a nasal pillow one, a nasal cushion one and a full face one I haven't opened yet, I'm holding that for when I get a cold just in case. I no longer get anxious about putting on this gear, I look FORWARD to it. The blast of air in my nose, and the Pur-Sleep aromatherapy that I'm using (mentioned ALL through this place), hunkered down in bed with the TV on is a wonderful place to be. It's become comforting. You will find that it will most likely put you right to sleep, and keep you there, every night you use it.

Good luck, I felt really new and strange on here when I first joined but now I feel like I know everyone on here and like we are all friends in the same boat, like a family in a way.

Keep an eye on this forum every single day the activity level is amazing, miss one day and you miss a whole lot of stuff!

Skits, as you know, I'm new too, and more than a few tears have been shed. It's a hard scary thing for me to get used to, but I'm starting to. Thanks to the fine people here that is.

In the short time here I already feel better. It's so nice to know there are people out there going thru the same thing. I'm leaving for vacation (cabin in the north) so I called my doc and I'm getting on some BP medication so I don't have THAT anxiety. I probably won't get my mask until I get back unless insurance works faster than usual. I'm kind of excited. I so want to feel like I used to and be able to stop blaming it on age and menopause.

Again, thanks everybody for coming to my aid! Will check back daily. It's like a real life soap LOL.
