Pur-Sleep at the Sleep Lab

Post by SleepGuy » Tue Sep 18, 2007 8:55 pm

I've had a number of sleep labs contact me about incorporating pur-sleep into their sleep studies, as an option particularly for patients who seem to have a harder time than others using the equipment for the first time.

I'd appreciate any insights on how a sleep lab might best go about doing this. It's a stressful experience, as we all know and may not necessarily be the most useful setting to introduce yet another variable into the mix.

Thanks!

To me the most pleasant aspect of pur-sleep is coming into my room and smelling the oils from the previous night. It just puts me in the mood to get that old mask on and hit the sack. My family likes to walk through the room to smell the pleasant and relaxing oils.

My hubby HATES any kind of smells, but since these are pure oils, he just loves them.

The issue I see is that there are some oils I just do not like. For instance the spice. And I don't know that until I've put some on a diffuser and put on the mask and started the cpap.

I might even run a poll and see which is the most calming/popular oils people use. I cross between the paradise and the clear/peace mixture. But I know some do not like the paradise. I can't wait to order the new clear - that sounds like it might be the best yet!

I use the paradise when I need that deep relaxation and use the clear/peace when my nose is slightly stuffy - have been able to avoid all OTC meds to clear up my nose at night with this mixture.

I'm glad sleep centers are interested in this - for those who just can't keep that mask on their faces, this might be the answer. I would have much rather been offered pur-sleep than ambien!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SleepyGuy - keep up the wonderful work! I have used pur-sleep every night since I got my trial, ordered more, and it is just a part of my routine wjith my cpap therapy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would think that it would have to be a part of the questions that they ask the patients when the test is setup. Some folks may know what scents that they find peaceful, and therefore just saying that one particular scent is all that they could use isn't really useful.

I would think the best way would be for them to get the whole line of scents and ask people in the initial questionnaire if they would like to try the aroma therapy, and give them the choice of which scent. There are enough options that there should be something to please everyone.

I think it's great that sleep centers are waking up and realizing this is a good thing! Is one of them the Pacific Sleep Center in Portland OR by chance?

I agree. Some people probably won't want any but others should have a choice. That way it's up to the individual. BTW, I love the Pur-Sleep aromas. It's such a pleasant way to fall asleep. So far I still need sleeping meds but I am a very long-term chronic insomniac and don't expect miracles anymore. I think this would make the setting in a sleep lab feel more like home.

I have been using Pur-Sleep almost every night and have grown to really enjoy it. I do think I fall asleep faster. I agree that Paradise and Clear are my two favorites and a touch of both is best.
My only problem is that the ResMed Elite cord is right under the intake and that is a pain. I find that I don't use the little tray with it because it is just more trouble for me. I just use the pads.

I haven't tried Paradise yet but that one and creme are ones I want to try next. Right now my favorites are Fresh and Clear. I've been using mine every night since I got it and just love it.

My husband enjoys the scents very much (he's currently a non-hosehead - although that is about to get checked out). He reminds me to use them every night.

Does the smell get "stuck" in the machine itself? How long does it take to air out? That would be my concern about using it in a sleep center setting. What one person liked one night, the next person using it the next night -- or within a few hours for a day-sleeper -- might hate. Or even it they like it, they might not be able to sleep with it. I can't sleep with the Clear.

I have the old style of diffuser so the scent doesn't go through the machine, just the hose and mask.

Well, when I go to the dentist to have my teeth cleaned, they offer different flavors of toothpaste (for the polisher), so why not have the sleep tech offer different scents?

Hey Bret,
What a great idea!!
It should definitly be a patient choice with perhaps some kind of sample pad. Everyone sniffing at the bottle may not be considered all that "sanitary", but having an atomized sample would be pretty wasteful.
From the Sleep Centers perspective, how would they "sanitize" the pad after each use ?? Control III?? Simple washing may not be adequate in the eyes of the "monitors"......

It would be great if you could come up with an offering to sleep centers!!!! I believe that many would benefit!!!

Still using mine every night -- love it!!!!

good luck
cheers

Julie, it's designed to work in any xPAP--the diffuser adds a small amount of aromatic as the air is drawn into the equipment.

However, at least one noncpaper uses this product by using a safety pin to pin a diffusion pad to the pillow case and use the drops. There's also a DreamWeaver lavender essential oil lotion that 's for cpapers and noncpapers alike. There's a good description on the website.

Try the Scented CPAP Mask with Pur-Sleep's CPAP Aromatherapy--CPAP Diffuser and Essential Oils.

I would suggest a throw-away substitute for the pad for one-use-only. Could also consider prepackaged pre-scented pads for this use.
