Differences between Encore Pro 1.8.49 vs. 1.8.65
Which brings up a good point. How do they decide what number the next release will be on any software? Was 1.8.65 release made 16 weeks after 1.8.49? Seriously, having some problems with 1.8.49 and the squirly SQL server, I wonder if the later release did anything to improve that situation.Snoredog wrote:

The same way your doctor comes up with your CM, without software data, they pick a number our of their hat. The trick is if the number is lower than the last version, they keep picking until the number is higher. Jimibthebest wrote:Which brings up a good point. There is a whole system for numbering Software (aside from the marketing reasons ie: 95, 2000, etc.. 2006, 2007)
1. = Major Revision - either a complete change of interface or underlying technology. Such as 2.X might change from SQL Server to Oracle, or change the way the interface works.
.8 = Minor Revision- usually some added features new reports or such, but the app is basicly the same.
.49 = small revision- usually bug fixes
The numbering system is usually controlled by checking out and checking in the source code into a Version Control System. So basicly there were 16 small changes made between 1.8.65 and 1.8.49.
A change in source code doesn't always mean a software release. Sometimes they fix several things, through several versions between releases.
So yes.. the correct answer actually is 16 in this case.
(ok.. for those following along at home... yes.. I am a nerd)

MSheda thanks for the explanation! Now if Respironics would only let people who have version 1.8.49 update to 1.8.65 without going through their password protected website, we would be able to have updated software without some of the crawly bugs. Perhaps some DME would like to PM to me their login and password, so I can update. Phat chance!

I started to say when you got the password to post it so the rest of us could get rid of the bugs also but if you did that they would take the site down for sure! When you get the password just e-mail me, I want it to.

I just got the Aussie package and yeah, it is V1.8.49 bundled with a USB card reader. It works fine for me so I don't really see the need to get a later release.Tasmania wrote:I too have wondered this since the software available down under is listed as 1.8.49 and that seems to be the only place to get the software anymore short of an act of Congress ratified by God, the three Stooges, and Elvis himself.
There are two schools of thought on SW upgrades: 1) get every upgrade possible because you never know when you're going to need it. 2) get upgrades only when you need to fix a particular problem.
If you are experiencing problems with .49 on your current CPAP setup, you're probably panting for sw support (or upgrades) and not getting that kind of help anymore can be frustrating for sure.
Being an old hardware engineer who was dragged kicking and screaming into the world of software, I took a different approach. When I knew I was going to get a CPAP machine, I did a lot of research. I knew I wanted Encore Pro and I also saw that people were having problems with v1.8 and the newer M series CPAPs (missing data?). However, the older "Classic" REMstar was relatively trouble free with Encore Pro v1.8.49 on windows XP.
So when it came to getting a CPAP machine, I asked for (and got) the Classic version instead of the M series. Now I don't demand too much of the software and (so far) it hasn't disappointed me.

FWIW...
As somebody who has worked in the software industry, I refuse to buy the latest and greatest of ANYTHING related to computers unless I absolutely have to. I'd rather let somebody else deal with the bugs. Besides, it's always less expensive.Lineman wrote:There are two schools of thought on SW upgrades: 1) get every upgrade possible because you never know when you're going to need it. 2) get upgrades only when you need to fix a particular problem.
I'm sure the behind-the-scenes "if they only knew" phenomenon exists in every industry.
