Headache Tip

Post by Guest » Tue Sep 18, 2007 11:33 am

Hi!

I got this tip from a friend this weekend, and asked my doc about it this AM. She confirmed it.

Mix two Ibruprofen (or Aleve) with 2 Extra Strength Tylenol. Supposed to work very well.

Cheers,
Barbara

Interesting...I never tried that cause Tylenol, by itself anyway, never worked for me. Good to know thanks!

Well, it has been pre-mixed for you/us in form of Excedrin.
What is Excedrin? It is Ibruprofen + Tylenol + Aspirin

Sergey - Tylenol regular is just acetaminophen. Extra strength has caffeine.

I used to get migraines and severe allergy related headaches daily and couldn't take some of the prescription medicines due to allergic reactions and so doctor told me to take extra strength asprin (I actually used 3 regular aspirin because it was cheaper than the extra strength) followed by 2 extra strength Tylenol 2 hours later. By taking them two hours apart you always had medicine in your system and it over lapped. When I am really sick I still follow this routine, although I rarely have migraines any more. The doctor stated that the generic equivalents were as good as the name brand as long as the main ingredients were of the same strength.

Um Extra Strength is just BIG pills,

Excedrin "Migraine" contains Acetaminophen +Caffeine

It is well known if you wake up with a migraine headache and drink a cup of coffee that the migraine may subside from the caffeine contained in coffee. Reason they added it to Tylenol and labeled it Excedrin Migraine. Caffeine causes those blood vessels to constrict (vessel shown below on left).

When you don't get enough oxygen (like from rebreathing too much CO2 or having OSA) to the brain at night the cerebral blood vessels naturally dilate to increase blood flow to the brain since that blood flow contains oxygen. More blood, more oxygen.

However, those cerebral blood vessels may have a trigeminal nerve attached which isn't very flexible, the nerve doesn't like to shrink and stretch, they like being stiff and inflexible. So the resulting headache pain comes from those trigeminal nerves that have the seratonin receptors attached.

Take caffeine the blood vessels constrict pain goes away. Smoking a cigarette has a similar effect with nicotine which also constricts blood vessels, not good for blood flow but it does constrict blood vessels.

Can't take anything with caffeine as I have a severe caffeine allergy -- you can be allergic to it. Sends my heart in a frenzy and have had to be hospitalized at one point for it.

Another reason I take regular strength -- just take more of it.

From the ingredient labels:
1 Regular Strength Tylenol = 325 mg. Acetaminophen
1 Extra Strength Tylenol = 500 mg. Acetaminophen

Life's too short to spend it worrying about the small stuff - after all, it's just small stuff.

Babbette,

I used to take 2 Aleve + 2 extra strength tylenols for a migraine. I called it my "magic bullet". It does indeed work! Takes 1-2 hours, and you're still worn out the rest of the day, but it consistently takes the pain away, at least for me.

Another trick: fill a storage ziploc with refrigerated water, and remove all the air before you seal it up. Sit in a recliner or lay down with the water bag on your forehead, over your eyes, on the back of your head, wherever it hurts. (No ice - it's too cold) Ahhhhh... stays cold for about an hour.

Thanks for posting this. I hope others find relief. Migraines suck!

Cathy

PS. I'm 6 months without a migraine, since CPAP. Whoo Hoo!

Indeed they do! I used to have them frequently enough to disrupt my school/work schedule more that i wanted it to. My PCP perscribed Maxalt which is great. Takes the pain away quickly, especially if I take it right when I notice it's coming on. I have an aura associated with mine, so it's not hard to tell. Thankfully though, after being perscribed growth hormone for another reason and swithcing to reading Braille (I'm almost blind and the eyes just don't have that much stamina any more), the migranes are few and far between! I als have a scrip for perscription strength ibuprofen because of knee surgeries and other chronic discomfort. It works well.
