Filter cap taken off on REMstar auto?

Post by golfcrazy » Wed Aug 29, 2007 7:11 am

I'm on my 2nd night of a 2 week trial with the REMstar auto. I was wakened last night by the high pressure and leakage from my mask(comfort gel). I felt something wasn't right and looked closer at the machine to figure out where the air flow comes into it and noticed that a filter cap was covering the foam filter at the back. I take it this should be removed before use? Annoyed with the sleep centre as they never mentioned this to me when taking the machine away and I never got any instructions for the machine as they said I basically just had to plug it in. Anyway I felt the machine did work better with this cap off and I look forward as optimistically as I can to my 3rd night on cpap!

I take that you have what is called the REMstar legacy "tank" style unit. The cap serves as a baffle, with the unit designed to run with the cap in-place.

Quoted from the REMstar Manual: "The filter cap is designed to reduce the noise from the REMstar Auto."

Running the unit without the cap in-place will not cause any problems.

The M-series RESMstar units are the latest. They utilize a much smaller inlet opening and smaller filters, and do not use a baffle cap over the inlet filter(s).

If you examine the tank filter cover carefully, you will notice that the two long sides are different. The shorter depth provides a slot for the air entry into the machine. Leaving it on is OK too. Neither condition should effect the mask leaking and noise. Rested Gal once said she never trusts a mask with the word comfort in the name. Having the auto, you may find that lowering the low end limit while keeping the upper end slightly above your titrated pressure will minimize your leak and noise problems. Notice that mask problems are the most usual source of trouble.
