Septoplasty and Presure Change

Post by jmps » Thu Aug 23, 2007 11:02 am

I just had Septoplasty done and it has greatly improved my nose breathing. It is actually amazing to relize that this is how one is supposed to be able to breath!

My sleep doc has said it should allow me to lower my pressure for CPAP. What have you all experienced who have had this done? Will a new sleep study be needed or just go by how I feel?

Thanks.

Hi, When was your septoplasty done? Mine was on Monday this week so I can't say I'm breathing much better than before but I'm hopeful.

I was also told it might make it possible to reduce the pressure for my cpap. I was told to wait about a month after the surgery then to get a prescription for borrowing an APAP (my machine is just a CPAP but I can borrow an APAP for a week with a doctor's prescription from my DME). So, we'll see.

Pressure is the same for me. I was at 12 before, I'm at 12 now....but it's a better breathing 12.

My current pressure is 16, I had my septoplasty on Thursday, and I'm due to see the DME on Monday so I will see what they say then I guess. I did tell them about the planned surgery when I first got my CPAP (it's just straight CPAP not auto). So far breathing isn't much easier for me yet either LOL still healing!

Wow there is a bunch of here in the same boat! I had mine done on Wed. August 8th (about two weeks ago). I had splints and the moustache bandage. I started bleeding a lot a few days after surgery and had to go to the ER to get it to stop. That Sunday I was really frustrated but I visited the surgeon on Monday. She removed the splints and most of the clots and it was SO much better. A few days later she removed a deep clot on one side and it was like having a rag pulled out my head. SO much better.

I am so happy I got this done and I am sure you will as well. The bleeding was unusual according to the surgeon. Perhaps I hit my nose while sleeping in the recliner. Pain was only minimal the whole time for me.

From my sleep study I was at first at 18 but this was lowered to 16 to help with mouth leaking even though I tape. 16 does work for me. I am hoping to go back on CPAP at the end of this month when I see the surgeon again. I miss the better sleep!

I hope to get a bit lower to make treatment easier in terms of leakage. I also am working at losing weight to see if this combo can eventually get me off CPAP all together. That is a long term goal though.

I am looking for some experience for my discussion with my sleep doctor about lowering pressure. I think he is planning on using how I feel rather than a new sleep study. That is OK with me as long as I feel OK. He doesn't think APAP is the way to decide this and doesn't think they respond fast enough. (I don't want to open that can of worms here though. )
