Respironics M Plus CPAP humidifier setting

Post by fredpb » Sun Aug 19, 2007 4:50 am

My humidifier has a setting from "0" to "5".

The DME said don't use anything above "2" or it could burn the metal plate built into the water tank??????

????????????

I never heard that. I've cranked it up damn near full blast and I think as long as there is actual water in the tank it's fine.

Wheb I wrote Respronics and asked about the settings, seemed on 2 it would almost run out of water in 8 hours, here is the reply I got back.

" The CPAPS were tested at a setting of 5(the highest) and a pressure of 20cm. They lasted 7 to 8 hours. There are some things which will affect that time. The first thing is a large mask leak will cause faster air flow which uses the water faster. The second is the temperature of the room (cool to cold),and the third is the humidity ( dry) in the room. These all will shorten the time which the water will last. If the water runs out before you wake, the heater will not burn up. It does not go above 145 degrees on the heating plate. That is not high enough to do any damage. If you should wake at some time, it is quite alright to add water if you wish".

At the time I was using a full face mask. Since going to the Nasal Aire II mask it does not use any where close to the same amount of water, so mask CO2 leak rate and other things do have a lot of effedt on what the humidifier does and how it works.

Humi setting

Post by KAZ » Sun Aug 19, 2007 9:29 am

My DME set mine at 3 for a starting point. It has been fine at that setting. I discard a small amount of DI water each morning and fill it back up. Regards

I have a little distilled water left in my humifier each day also set at 3. I don't dispose of the distilled water, just add to it. Is that okay? Trying to save money I guess, already have spent my $5000.00 deductible this year and bet they will cancel my insurance at end of year since I am individual self pay (geez, hate insurance companies).

I've read and been told you are supposed to dispose of that water every day, and let the chamber dry out. Luckily distilled water is cheap, about 79 cents a gallon, give or take.

Sorry, didn't realize it was so cheap. My hubby bought first gallon and I have to go out today to buy second gallon.

Yeah I didn't know it at first either, I think right now I'm on my third gallon, need to get a 4th today. Someone else bought my first one too...and then when I saw how cheap it was I was relieved. Out of everything you end up spending money on this is definitely the least expensive.

FYI distilled water 99 cents/gal here in NY area. I have found that even if one drop of water reaches my nasal cushion that it will immediately break the seal, cause a tiny air leak, and lubricate the cushion just enough to cause it to eventually pop out of place on high pressure (I'm a 15cm'er). Has anyone else experienced this or is it just me?

I’ve used all setting levels and have not had a problem with it burning up or with the water going dry yet. I wouldn’t worry about what the DME told you. Why would Respironics risk law suits with settings that would result in devices that would self destruct? Just make sure that you keep enough water in the tank. As you use it you will get to know how much water you use at a given setting. If you plan to use setting 4 or 5, I recommend you fill it close to the full mark.

My DME told me to change out the distilled water every morning too. Within a month I was doing it once a week when I cleaned out the tank with everything else. Now I just top it off before bed time and not bother with the morning draining or weekly cleaning. I have yet to see any weird creatures swimming around. You will see some on this forum that clean their stuff every day and others at the other extreme that rarely clean their equipment out. It ultimately comes down to what you are comfortable with doing.

For those of us that live in the colder climates, one may find that rain-out may be a problem in the winter. If you do, you may take a look at some of the posts on the Australian heated hose. It allows me to keep the humidity level where I like it. It’s over $100 but was worth not having to wake once or twice a night to empty out my hose.
