Whats going on?

Post by davjan4 » Sat Aug 11, 2007 11:53 pm

I'm on night two of Cpap. Ijust woke up after being asleep for just a few minutes. I was in a panic to get air. the pressure on the autopap was ramppeed up to what must have been the max (I think 16). I had to rip the maskoff of my face and gasp for air. I thought that with cpap I would not awaken gasping like that? IT was frightening, my heart was racing, IT gelt like that machione had been trying to shove air down my throut, but I was not breathing. What's goin on?

davjan, if you'll go to your Profile (button along the top of this webpage) and list your equipment, that would help people assist you.

I went back to one of your posts in another topic, to remind me what machine you're using -- which happens to be the Puritan Bennett Goodknight 420E Autopap.

I'm not a doctor, but if it were me, I'd turn off the FL setting that shows up in the display window of your machine if you go through the settings that are available to the user.

If you have trouble finding the FL setting in the display window of your machine or don't know what button to push to change it, send me a Private Message (button at top right of this website page) so I can give you my email address.

I'd try it with FL OFF to see if that settles the machine down.

Note for people using the Silverlining software with a 420E: that "FL" setting in the display window on the machine is actually the IFL1 setting if you look in the software's "Advanced Settings" menu.

IFL1 is called just "FL" in the Patient menu in the display window on the machine. IFL2 should always be left on, but IFL1 needs to be turned off for some people (not "most people", just "some people") to keep the 420E from misreading those people and doing a pressure runaway.

I don't know that that's what's happening with you davjan, but turning off FL (IFL1) would be what I'd try. For a night or two, anyway....just to see if the pressure will behave more smoothly.
