Ways to consume Apple Cider Vinegar
Ways to consume Apple Cider Vinegar
I've been reading about all the benefits one can receive from consuming apple cider vinegar, it was one of the magic cures listed in the Healthline books of common cures, so I thought I'd give it a try so I bought a quart while at the store today.
Now how to consume it, I tried making a salad with maters cheese whatever else I could toss in, mixed it with some olive oil, that wasn't bad.
Then reading from this site (below) I read where you can mix it with sugar or other so it is not so bad going down. Since I had some Splenda, I mixed a shot glass with a packet of that, hey it wasn't too bad. So until I find other ways to consume it, I'll take a shot of that once a day. Can't remember what the quart of ACV cost, but it was dirt cheap.
Then I found this website, they have all kinds of ideas, they also list other benefits of consuming ACV, I'm sure there are limits to everything, but hey its worth a try over any drug I'd be willing to take.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar was a staple in my mother's kitchen. At that time vinegar & oil was the standard salad dressing. Every restaurant table and home table had vinegar and oil cruets on them.
During harvest season she would have vinegar and oil over plates of cut up veggies. She also liked it poured over cooked spinach. In the latter years she moved off the farm and had the ACV less frequently. Except for a bout with a blood clot after a long plane trip, and childbirth, she never needed hospitalization until she was in her early 70s. Did take meds for HBP and hypothyroid.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane. My 84 year old mother is at this moment hospitalized and her legendary ability to bounce back from near death in recent years appears to be near history this time. I've been doing a lot of reminiscing but hadn't thought of the vinegar. By the way, we rinsed our hair in it. Made it squeaky clean with a healthy shine.
Snoredog, I read the site you mentioned. It cautioned about the effect of ACV on tooth enamel. Mom must have had a secret to avoiding that, as she still has a mouth nearly full of teeth.

I remember when I was a kid, we would go fishing down on the river, my dad would find this natural spinich think it was called Polk salad (think that was what they called it or I'm confusing it with that song Polk salad Annie ), but that stuff was great! we used to eat it with a vinegarette dressing over it.kteague2 wrote:Apple cider vinegar was a staple in my mother's kitchen. I like taking a fresh tomato and slicing it paper thin put it on a plate with the vinegarette dressing and putting it in the fridge for a few hours, those are great.
As for ACV and teeth enamel? You can neutralize it with baking soda, but my kid's a Dentist so I don't worry about my teeth. My mom is going to be 90 at the end of this month.

I wonder how vinegar affects GERD? I also have ectopic gastric mucosa within my upper esophogeal sphincter and am a little afraid vinegar might irritate it. For years I drank a 3 ounce cup of olive oil with my breakfast but I was afraid to do that after I received my diagnosis.
I actually like the taste of ACV. Of course it is good on the chips side of fish ' chips.

Vinegar
Polk Sallet - I learned something new today. I never saw it in writing so I assumed what I'd heard said was "salad". In the 70s polkweed grew outside the paper mill on the edge of a densely wooded river area where my father worked. I was newly married and cooked it for my husband by instruction from someone who was familiar with it. I parboiled it to get the bitterness out, then fried it in a little bacon grease. My husband never used the vinegar on it - he used hot sauce. My mom stayed true to her vinegar. Oh, and she kept baking soda on hand, used it a to help indigestion, to brush her teeth on occasion, and to clean stains on counters. Maybe she used it when eating vinegar, who knows.

I have a friend who depends on apple cider vinegar for Chol, diet, HBP
1 qt apple juice,
1 pt grape juice
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup honey
Drink a small juice glass once daily
It seems some years ago the grocery stores had something like this called "Jogging Juice"
I double this for a 2/3 gallon..
Its not bad. Refreshing actually..I also add 1 tablespoon pina colada (non-alcoholic cocktail mix) for a change of taste. Smooths out the vinegar.
What do you think??

I too am very curious about acv. I have read of it as a CURE for GERD, but that of course goes against everything modern western medicine tells us about GERD, but that doesn't mean much, imho!
If you are worried about your teeth just swish your mouth with water after you swallow and don't rush to the bathroom to brush your teeth and you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Acid can soften enamel and combined with toothpaste can brush a little bit off. This is why you see all the commercials for special toothpastes now. There is a subset of people who inadvertantly brushed their teeth after consuming orange juice and they did it for YEARS and ended up with a problem.
This is a good reason to never be very strict in a daily routine. Moderation and flexibility are good for you.
ACV is used by some of us in the off topic thread called something like Natural Cleaning--your home, your house, your body. I use it in a mix to clean my shower (along with washing soda, 20 mule team borax and an essential oil for scent--and water). I also use it on my face sometimes and especially in my hair to combat dandruff.
All the granola-birkenstock types tell you to buy the acv with "mother" which is cloudy and gross but if you wanted to make vinegar out of an odd bottle of wine you had open that you didn't care to drink, you could just pour some in and leave it at room temp for a while, I believe. The bacteria or yeast or whatever converts the sugars to vinegar are what the mother is.
That is what I know about acv. I wish I had some nostagic story like you guys.
Recipe alert:
I do make a great cucumber salad that most midwesterners make, I would guess. Slice a cuke or two thin, slice some onion thin and then marinate it in a mix that is 1 part acv, 1 part water, 1 part sugar. The cucumber will release a lot of water, so the acv mix needs to barely cover.

Here's the Bragg website info on Apple cider vinegar
http://www.bragg.com/FAQ/faq_applecider.html
They discuss drinking it diluted and straight and say that it's best not to drink it straight. One of the uses on the website is to sprinkle it over popcorn!

I drink it in the morning in a cup of tea. Two tablesppons ACV mixed with a quarter teaspoon of baking soda to cut the acidity. Then add a little sweetener (Stevia or honey - avoid the artificial stuff) and brew the tea. Three times a day is recommended but twice is realistic and once is all I do. You can't take it every day, so after five days you take two off.
The damage to your teeth is most likely a problem for those who mix it with their drinking water and sip it all day long, creating a constant coating throughout the day. The baking soda eliminates the threat.
ACV will help with GERD if the problem stems from lack of acid in the stomach (food goes undigested and backs up into the esophogas). To test for this take a quarter teaspoon baking soda in a glass of water first thing in the morning. If after a few minutes you burp, then you have enough stomach acid and ACV will not help with your GERD.
After six weeks of BiPAP, ACV and 30 pounds lighter due to diet change and exercise, my blood tests have gone from metabolic disorder (high cholesteral, high triglysirides, borderline diabetic) to, in my doctor's words, "perfect". It is actually pretty amazing how fast your body can recover once you start treating it right.

I went looking and found this:
Results indicated that:
* All groups had better blood readings with the vinegar than with the placebo
* People with prediabetic symptoms benefited the most from the vinegar, with blood-glucose concentrations cut by almost half
* People with diabetes improved their blood-glucose levels by 25 percent with the vinegar
* People with prediabetic symptoms had lower blood-glucose levels than healthy participants after both drank vinegar
A follow-up study geared at testing vinegar's long-term effects also found that taking vinegar yielded a pleasant side effect: moderate weight loss. In the four-week study, half of participants took a two-tablespoon dose of vinegar prior to each of two meals daily, while the other half were told to avoid vinegar.
Participants taking the vinegar lost an average of two pounds over the four-week period, while weight remained constant in the non-vinegar group. And some participants taking vinegar lost up to four pounds.
Soooo.....I just had lunch, with vineger/honey/water taken just before eating. Maybe I can reverse the weight gain that started when I started using my PRO2....about 25 pounds so far.
I think I can do this twice a day. Mixed with honey, the vinegar wasn't bad. The site tells how much to take.

<< Gee.... and they thought I was joking. LOL... >>
As a kid, I remember old country folk downing brown vinegar to help cut through a hangover, often drinking it right after a meal with fatty meat, anytime they had a fever, chest congestion, flu or cold... and especially when they had broken bones or were recovering from an open wound or surgery. Many old-timers swore by those kitchen cabinet remedies.
Broken bones and surgeries are nortorious for yielding clots and causing plaque from veins and arteries to start moving, as are casts and splints -- the old-timers knew to try to avoid those piping plugs by downing the brown vinegar to keep things thinned out and moving along.
I don't remember the formula, but in the Corps we used to mix brown vinegar with black boot polish in order to high-gloss the stompers for I.G. Inspections and dignitary look-sees.
Yep, I had my dose this evening.
