Remstar Pro M Series - Recording Apneas while awake?

Post by agridi57 » Wed Aug 08, 2007 9:28 am

I am on CPAP now for 7 weeks. Four weeks ago I got the Encore Pro software and immediately begun to notice that the Remstar Pro M series would record apneas while I was awake. I contacted Respironics and they agreed that I need to have the machine changed. Two weeks ago my DME delivered a new machine. However, I continue to notice the same issue. This occurs primarily in the morning once I am awaken or when I first lay down in bed at night with the C-Ramp on. Has anyone experienced the same problem or is it my breathing that is causing this? My AHI is averaging about 5 and my pressure setting is 11.

The machines are supposed to detect events when you're ASLEEP.
You don't breathe the same when you're AWAKE.

Nothing wrong with your machines.

I agree nothing wrong with your machine.

That machine has NO idea if you are awake or asleep, it just looks at how you are breathing. Since it is a "Pro" machine and basically a CPAP it is NOT going to respond if it does see an event. About the only thing it will respond to is leak, it will rev up to compensate for the leak.

If you stop breathing or are a shallow breather to mimic a hypopnea it will record it. Then when you are falling asleep there are artifacts such as pauses similar to centrals that the machine can pick up as hypopnea and score them as such.

The auto version of that machine has a built-in settling period where it ignores the first 18 minutes of sleep for that very reason.

Respironics isn't going to tell you anything, in fact without a valid error code being displayed on the machine indicating a machine failure, I doubt they would suggest anything other than seeing your DME or doctor.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

I just posted a couple days back about the same thing. I too have mine at 11cm, and noticed some hypopneas show up when I was awake. I wish I was having a ahi of 5 average still running from 10 to around 20! Need to gather up some charts and go have a talk to the Doc

When I first lay down, I find myself clearing my throat, coughing a few times, swallowing (a lot) and generally getting settled. (it's an old folks thing) I've noticed my machine records a lot of my antics as "events". I've tested it and tried to do all of that before "suiting up" and laying down, and it makes a difference. Not enough to make a big deal out of, but a difference, non the less.
