Do you own a backup machine?

Post by SleepingBeauty » Mon Aug 06, 2007 11:12 am

I just purchased my M series in January. I have been thinking of getting a backup machine, but it was not on my high priority list since my machine is still brand new. I have been looking for the same model as I currently own on craigslist and in the newspaper.

Unfortunately, my only machine died last night. It's under warranty, and I purchased it through CPAP.Com, so I'm sending it in today for repair.

I asked about loaner units. I can rent an auto machine for 139.99. Or, I am thinking it might just be better to just put that money toward a backup machine.

I am looking at the little GoodKnight 420G, since it is the most reasonably priced new machine and there are no good deals on craigslist in my area at the moment.

So my question: Do you own a backup machine, and if so, did you buy a little travel like the GoodKnight, a used model like you use as your main machine, or just whatever you found as the best deal?

Last night was pure hell. I had forgotten how horrible sleeping was before the machine. It may take 2-3 weeks for the repair and after last night's sample, I will not make it without either a loaner or buying a backup.

What did you choose for your backup?

I have a backup machine.
I got the Evo Everest2. I picked this machine because it has a battery and humidifier that attach directly to the machine, making it 1 unit. I have used it for travel(using regular power) and power outages(using the battery) and I really like it. It has no bells or whistles but for backup and travel, I don't need any. I got my package through our host, cpap.com.

Actually your example is a perfect one to indicate that we all must have a back up machine. I got my second machine (BiPap Auto) from cpap.com last week. Unfortunately it was defective, so I am waiting for replacement machine to arrive. So it will be my primary machine. The old one - RemStar Plus was (and still is my machine) since January of 2006. During this period of time I did not have a back up machine (with an exclusion of one month when I was testing S8 Vantage). Luckily for me it didn’t brake down. But I think having 2 machines will be a very good idea.

I use my original 420G as a backup and, sometimes, for travel. Right now I can't decide whether to take my 420G or M Series Auto on an upcoming vacation.

I started off two years ago with a REMstar Pro 2 and last year acquired two REMstar Autos. One was a lightly-used one from a forum member and the other one was a new one from CPAP.COM. They're all the same style (Legacy models) so everything will interchange. My Pro 2 is still the most-used.

You might check to see if Cliff is still thinking of selling his.

Den, saved me some typing, as we have the same machines. I use the Auction APAP, all the time, 2800 hours on it by me. The new CPAP.COM APAP, is Backup 1, and the CPAP PRO 2 is the the BACK-BACK-UP. Since they are the "Classics" and we are prepared, they may never see the light of day. Long live "Tanks" Jim

Since my sleep doctor and I had discussed that I be given a fully data capable CPAP right from the get-go he ordered a Resmed S8 Elite w/Humidaire 3i thru a local DME supplier in October 2006.

I didn't sleep for beans during my titration study and not much better during my second titration study so when I was still having problems he ordered a loaner autoPAP in December 2006 from the same local DME supplier. That was the "classic" RemStar Auto w/C-Flex. Of course, the Humidaire 3i was not compatible w/the RemStar and the local DME could not or would not provide a humidifier. I couldn't tolerate xPAP w/o a humidifier. The best my sleep lab could come up w/was a loaner passover humidifier. I couldn't tolerate the passover in the heart of winter in Michigan. Fortunately, a fellow CPAPper loaned me his F&P HC 100 stand alone heated humidifier. I broke a mask part, the local DME supplier wouldn't replace - until I finally pitched a hairy ape fit and their EMT "found" a spare part for me. Thru all the problems my sleep doctor did manage to come up w/a new pressure for me.

During this time I decided that I "would" have an auto of my own and I purchased a new RemStar Auto w/C-Flex complete w/integrated heated humidifier, manuals, case, etc. at yahooauctions when they were still in business. I didn't want the M Series.

My intentions had been to use the RemStar as my backup as I found I really preferred being able to so easily access the data each morning via the LED screen on the Resmed S8 Elite.

THEN a Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage w/505 hours on it, complete w/Humidaire 3i, case, manuals, etc. became available from a fellow CPAPper here in the forum. I couldn't pass it up. I bought it.

My son-in-law works out of town a lot. He has a Virtuoso w/clumsy humidifier and due to its size wasn't using xPAP except what at home. So he has my RemStar Auto & humidifier that he uses when out of town and his Virtuoso at home.

Meanwhile I am using my Elite to stay compliant for insurance purposes until the capped rental is complete and it is mine. My Vantage for the time being is my backup. (I did use it for two weeks to ensure it was working properly).

I have two backups. My classic auto "tank" is my primary machine. Then I got a used one (classic auto tank) with low mileage as a backup. I love the tanks, too! Then I tried to travel on a plane with the tanks! Love them, but want them to stay at home. So, I got another used machine, in this case an M series auto for travel. Thanks to Snoredog, I was able to fix some damage that occured during shipping. It is a nice size for travel compared to the tank. Plus, I can use my card reader and software with it.

The idea of having to spend a night without a cpap chills me to the bone . I also got a battery backup in case the power goes out (Xantrex Power Pack). If it goes out for too long, I have a friend with a bicycle pump. . . Then I'll have a bi-pap

I know a lot of folks on this board eather have or are thinking about getting a backup (Me included). I had the same opinion as sleepin beauty, mine is also new as of January and the obtaining of the backup has been a fairly low priority although I have been thinking about it.

How many have actually have had to resort to the backup? (Lets see a show of hands or maybe a show of computers) Not counting travel use!

Hmm, now I have to think about this too ! I guess I'm too new to this, I never thought about a back up. I would be willing to get one, but don't I have to ask the physician for another rx for it? I don't even see a sleep doctor, only my family doctor who ordered the test. I have moderate apnea from what she said, so would it be a really big deal to have to wait if mine went out? I guess there is a lot to learn with this.

I did. Once. My Vantage was subject to Recall, I'm on 2L supplemental 02 so had to stop using it immediately.

The timing on the loaner autoPAP worked out well as my Elite had to be replaced and so I had the loaner auto (supposed to be a 2 week loaner - ended up being somewhat better than 3 weeks 'cause I would NOT return it UNTIL they got me my replacement Elite).

Resmed would have replaced one immediately if I had gone thru them because of the 02 supplementation but my DME supplier is a sheister so it took better than 3 weeks for them to get around to it. They "forgot" - until they wanted their loaner auto back. (They charged my insurance for an entire month tho - in ADDITION to the month's (capped) rental on my Elite!)

None of mine have ever "died", but early last year my Pro 2 was developing a little "wheeze" as the C-Flex changed speeds. I wanted to get it fixed while it was still under warranty so about this time last year I sent it in (through CPAP.COM). I also asked them to re-set the internal time clock on it, too.
It's been super quiet since.

Since all mine are "Tanks", never had a problem except with the used APAP, It beeped and flashed one nite. I reset it's power, it never did it again. It scared me though, I'd only had it a week, but it's paid for it's self by now. Jim

I travel quite a bit, so after a travel experience where I left something at home and couldn't use my ResMed S7 Lightweight CPAP, I decided that it really was worth buying a separate travel kit that was complete in itself and always ready to go. So the ResMed S8 Lightweight in my travel kit has also been my home "backup".... which I have only ever had to on a couple of occasions due to power outages since the S8 can run off 12V DC.

I've fortuitously able to upgrade to APAP, having come across two very sweet deals on new Resmed S8 Autosets lately, so the S7 Lightweight is now on the market and the S8 Lightweight will probably soon follow.

Cheers,

Bill
