No Luck with Masks..HELP

Post by atruvirgo » Fri Aug 03, 2007 8:41 am

I have tried:
Swift
Breeze
Bravo
NA II
Comfortlite
UMFF
F&P 431
Comfortfull 2
Comfortgel Nasal
ComfortClassic Nasal
F&P 406
F&P407
Healthdyne Soft Series Nasal

I am soooooooo frustrated.

I have concluded for whatever reason pillows are not for me.
I also cannot get any of the full face to seal and not leak. All the smalls are too big for me.

The nasals are the best but I have started mouth breathing and gasping in my sleep. I can't wear a chin strap out of neoprene because I get a rash.

I toss, turn, gasp, and wake up exhausted. I never slept this bad prior to cpap. My pressure is 7 and my AHI w/o CPAP is 15.

Any full face "super small size" mask suggestions?
A Chin strap w/o neoprene?

HELP!!!!

Taping?

Buying new masks - or at least new seals/pillows to make sure your leaks aren't a result of having aquired worn out seals / pillows from people who have discovered that their old ones are no longer any good so now they're selling them on e-bay?

I don't think Ace bandage has neoprene. Some use tape, others use polygrip adhesive, and the Hybrid is not on your list.

Sounds like you and I have some of the same problems. I am still searching too.
Also you said you have tried the F&P 406, where does that one not fit you?
This last 2 nights I have used the Activa. It is WAY to big but I have pulled it down so it doesn't leak into my eyes and just let it set on my top teeth! It seals and if I can go to sleep with the mask on my lip I can sleep. I wish they made it a half inch shorter or 1 inch longer and I could use it for a ff!

My heart goes out to you, Debbie. I almost have to wonder if they really do have somewhere near the right pressure for you or if they are way off on your pressure need.

But, back to all these masks you've tried. I won't go into the nasal pillows because I gave up on them fairly early.

Have you gone back and tried each nasal mask in turn again and determined just exactly what was the problem w/its fit?

Does your DME supplier have a pretty wide selection of masks to at least LOOK at, even if they aren't very generous about letting you try w/o buying them.

IF you have figured out just exactly wasn't working for you w/the various nasal cushions you might be able to take the failed masks along w/you to the DME's and compare them w/their selection as far as lenghth of cushion opening, width of cushion opening.

Maybe you need the ability to adjust the angle between forehead and bridge of nose? Maybe you need the ability to adjust the length/distance beween bridge of nose and bottom of nose?

You obviously want to check out the Small and/or Petite sizes in as many different models as possible in comparison to those you've used and where those that failed you caused the failure compare to them.

Have you tried (with the nasal cushion masks) putting the mask on at your pressure whilst sitting down, adjust it loosely, then lay down on your back w/your mask on and CPAP running at your pressue and then making any adjustments needed for a COMFORTABLE fit and only minor leaks? Then rolling from one side to the other and making any minor adjustments necessary during the process.

Minor leaks can often be eliminated just by moving your facial muscles, twisting your now, wagging your jaw back and forth, running a fingertip along the seam between the cushion and your facial skin.

Hang in there. Keep trying. Good luck and God bless.

Doesn't the Quattro come in a extra small, just a thought. Might try the old standby panty hose for a chin strap, no neoprene.

A neoprene free chin strap is offered by Breatheware called the "Halo". P/N H3407. I own one and like it, seems pretty well thought out and comfortable, easy to adjust velcro. Doesn't interfere with my ears and doesn't interfere with my existing headgear. Stays put due to the cutout on the chin part. Here are links to mfr. & online store. Sorry CPAP.com, couldn't find this chinstrap on your site or I would have posted your link as well.

order a Small Soyala Full Face mask, it runs smaller than other mfg's "small". It doesn't have any neoprene in its headgear.

It is also the quietest mask you will find period.

I've suggested it to you several times before, but you keep ignoring that and spinning your wheels wasting money on those other gimmics, one day you'll figure it out.

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/soyala ... dgear.html

but you BETTER confirm your size first, those things are not returnable. For a full face mask it MUST ride as shown below or you will have problems with the cushion leaving a gouge on your nose.

They are measured in a mirror using a ruler and measuring from the center of the pupil of the eye down to the indention in the chin. That is where your cushion should ride if the mask is properly fitted. if you have to pull the mask down on the nose lower than the center of the pupil of the eye, it will leak more into the eyes, it will put too much pressure on the nose and even contribute to nasal congestion depending on the design of the cushion.

So go measure your vertical dimension and I'll check it with a Medium I have to make sure a small will work. DO NOT GO BY the SOYALA sizing guide floating around in PDF format, that is is wrong and you will end up with the incorrect size guaranteed. Measure your vertical dimension from below:
Image

Once you find your vertical dimension, you can compare that to a known size, in this case below is a Soyala FF Medium, it only measures 3.0" from center to center on the cushion, the part that rides against your face. For it to work, your dimension has to fall "at" or inside that dimension. If you are unsure, call Somnotech.com and ask them for the same measurement on the Small cushion, then compare that to your vertical dimension.

This Medium obviously did NOT work for me because it is clearly too small (size was obtained from their PDF sizing guide which is totally WRONG). My vertical dimension measures is 3-3/4" which is a Medium in any other FF mask I have ever used. I went to a Large in the Soyala Full Face and it perfect.

Not ignoring the suggestion Snoredog, just that I can't afford it and Apria doesn't carry it. So I have to buy it myself. Nothing here on Mask roulette or Ebay has come up.

Snoredog, very good info about soyala. Since you have a large size soyala, please give the measurement as well (no need picture).

Thanks.

The masks that I still own are a brand new Opus, ComfortFull II small and an Ultra Mirage FF small. The last 2 are too big for me. I am open to sale or trade of a quattro or soyala xs or s

The LARGE measures 3-3/4".

Above is a side-by-side comparison of a Medium Soyala Full Face and a "Medium" UltraMirage Full Face, you can clearly see the difference in sizing.

So if you are now using a Medium in the UMFF you will most likely need a Large in the Soyala Full Face. It is best to measure your vertical dimension first to make sure.

I find the nasal version of the Soyala also runs a tad small compared to Respironics and Resmed nasal interfaces, I use a Large in that also where I used a Medium in the others.

nasal mask sizing

Post by lummusc » Sun Aug 05, 2007 11:08 am

Snoredog,
What should the vertical dimensions be for the nasal mask? I was thinking of ordering an x-small, but now I'm not sure. From where to where should I measure?
