Asthama and Sleep Apnea

Post by Patrick A » Sun Jul 15, 2007 7:35 pm

I was diagnosed with Bronchial Asthma and then a couple of weeks after that I was also diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, I wonder how many people also suffer from that?

The part that gets me is that as a kid I always seemed to get Bronchitis. Had my tonsils out when I was 7or 8 never got sick after that. Smoked for many years and quit.

I was told that I couldn't breath one time because I was fat. Then I went to the emergency room one afternoon because I couldn't breath and they said I had pneumonia. Then went back not being able to breath again......then they said I had Asthma. I got a nebulizer and haven't had problems with it since. Now only once in awhile do I have a problem breathing.

I have asthma also but it has been under control for about three years now. I probably had it most of my life but it was not severe. I remember my chest hurting when i tried to breathe deeply and how running around playing I would always be panting and out of breath. As i grew older I was an athlete but cannot remember ever not having to really work on my breathing. I do have allergies that can bring on an attack but I also have exercise induced episodes. They are worse when I first start exercising so I learned to always warm up slowly after about 15 minutes or until my breathing returns to normal and then I can go until I am too tired to move.

Another one for the asthma club! I was diagnosed maybe five or six years back. Have been on allergy shots and seeeing an allergist/asthma doc. for severe allergies for seven or eight years now. I think my asthma was a pairing with/maybe almost a result of my allergies. If my allergies flare up, so does the asthma! Heat makes it all worse! I was diagnosed asthma after a week-long stent at work with no AC and mid eighties to ninety degree heat. Not good! Needles to say I live from April through October, sometimes November with AC. South Carolina summers stick around forever sometimes! This time of the year I just stay put indoors as much as possible. The pulminologist says the CPAP treatmebt will likely help my asthma as well. I'm anxious to try it out!

I have asthma as well. I developed it about 3 years ago, which is close to the time I probably got sleep apnea too. Hmmm!!

Mine is kept under control pretty well. I thought it was from living in the desert, where the wind is constantly blowing dirt and junk around. I never had problems before. My pulmonologist tested me to see if it was allergy-caused, and it is not. Now I wonder if it is OSA caused.

Whoa, sounds a lot like me. I got a very nasty virus when I was about 32 and never could kick the cough. Doc said the virus had damaged my lungs, and I now have what is called "cough variant asthma." That's also when I started to become majorly zombified. In the past 3 years I've had 3 cases of bronchitis, pleurisy (oh joy! can't say enough for that!) and a case of viral pneumonia that left me in the hospital for a week in Feb this year. But now I think I know why they had such a hard time getting my O2 levels up to normal.

I can be added to the Asthma bunch -- though my asthma is directly related to allergies.

Interestingly enough, I didn't have allergies until I came back from overseas (agent orange and who knows what else we'd been exposed to). I didn't have them as a kid (other than the chlorine in public swimming pools).

I've been on allergy meds ever since.....when I tried to stop them at one point, it nearly killed me, so I take it seriously now......Not being able to breathe is not a fun experience.
I also used to get bronchitis all the time, sometimes very severe, but I haven't had a bout of that since I quit smoking cigarettes in 1975......

Don't know when OSA started -- I've been tired for years!!

cheers
gg
