Steel Cage Death Match Smackdown at Apria

Post by geoDoug » Thu Jul 12, 2007 6:06 pm

Our mission is to be the first choice of patients and customers for their homecare needs.

We will accomplish this by:

* Exceeding our customers' expectations every day
* Demonstrating high clinical standards and compassion in patient care
* Being responsive and flexible

We will deliver on our mission by:

* Demonstrating a customer-first approach in all that we do
* Leading change in the homecare industry
* Managing our business efficiently in order to deliver value and quality to our customers and shareholders
* Recognizing that every person in the company makes a difference
That's Apria's mission statement and is on the wall of the reception area I went to today.

Some real fast background:
I got my machine (Remstar Plus w/o cflex), heated humidifier, and comfortclassic mask on 3/16. (Remember that date. It's important.)

After a ton of research and reading here, I learned about the various features. and decided that what I really want is a Remstar M Series Pro w/cflex.

Second week of June: I Called Apria to ask if they would swap my CPAP machine for a Remstar M-Series Pro w/cflex. Answer: "if you get a prescription for that exact machine and Aetna approves it."

Third week of June: Talked to Aetna, who said they’d OK this.
Third week of June: Called Stanford Sleep Clinic to get the prescription.

June 25: Left message for Apria Respiratory Therapist to call me. No answer.
June 27: Left message for Apria Respiratory Therapist to call me. No answer.
June 29: Left message for Apria Respiratory Therapist to call me. No answer.
July 2: Left message for Apria Respiratory Therapist to call me. No answer.
(Sensing a pattern?)

Which brings us to today's showdown:

Since they weren't returning my phone calls, I went down to Apria unannounced with new prescription in-hand. I can honestly report that I was polite and diplomatic, but firm, the whole time. The visit started with this:
Me: "Is there a Respiratory Therapist available?"
Receptionist: "Do you have an appointment?"
Me: "No. I've called RT several times and nobody has returned my messages."
Receptionist: "Oh."
They steadfastly refused for an RT to meet with me. (No "I'm sorry." Just “RTs are by appointment only.” There was an RT standing right there! But he wouldn't actually go into a room with me! )

But I digress. I got to talk to a nice woman in customer service. She's the only person at Apria who I've gotten a good vibe from and is the one who talks directly to the insurance folks. Now we're cookin'. After explaining my background to yet another person, she told me that she’ll call Aetna today to find out:
  • Definitively will Aetna cover swapping the machines?
Will Aetna cover a new humidifier?
If not, what will the cost to me be of each?
Her guess was that swapping the machines shouldn’t be a problem, but the humidifier was another story, since I outright purchased that. (At that point, was assuming that if Aetna won’t cover the humidifier and it costs less, I’ll get it online.)

A footnote: My gut feeling about the woman at Apria was right. She talked to Aetna today and called me right back. Exactly as she suspected, Aetna will pay to swap the CPAP machines, but will not pay for another humidifier. If I get an M-Series heated humidifier through Apria, it’ll cost me $410! (WTF???) From cpap.com it’s $150. Looks like a no-brainer to buy it online.

As an aside: I'm also on the prowl for a hybrid mask. As far as that's concerned, she verified that my insurance won't cover a new mask for a couple more months (every six months). She said have the sleep clinic write a prescription for the exact mask including the Mfr number. (Apparently, the fact that my original prescription said "according to customer fit and preference" wasn't good enough.) So I'm going to eat the out-o-pocket expense, rather than wait a couple more months before my insurance will pay for another and I "get" to go through the motions with a DME.

In short

1. Apria will get me my machine.
2. I'm ordering the Humidifier online.
3. I'm getting the mask from another source, since I don't want to wait.
4. All is good with the world...kindof.

Phew! Dang that felt good.

Doug.

Sounds like the same Bovine Excrement I got from Apria Rip off.....

I wonder if enough people complain to their insurance companys and the Insurance Commissioner in your home state about Apria Rip off if some thing would be done about the poor customer service and the bad treatment the patients that are sent there for their Cpap equipment something would be done.

What a hassle! I would call your insurance and tell them the probs you are having and tell them you would like to switch DME and where should you go? It might be worth driving to go somewhere else, even another city!

I'm so glad I didn't have to mess with this company! Mine was annoying, but at least they worked with me and always return my call. Geez, I think they are downright pleasant in comparison! (Rotech)

Yes, I had some hassles with mine to get the machine, but I did finally get it. They always return phone calls. They do some game-playing, but since they have a reputation to uphold, they give ok customer service. It's a smaller local company. I've decided that they are the best of a bad bunch around here, so I'd still recommend them to others, but with the warning that the person has to go in with all their ducks in order and be willing to hang tough.

I also couldn't get Apria to call me back....I was due for a new mask and couldn't just have them send the make/model I wanted, but had to go in and be fit...which would be fine if I could get someone to schedule the appointment. I finally contacted Kaiser Member Services and asked if I could go to a different DME b/c I'd been calling for 2 months and never got a call back. I guess the key is sick the insurance on the DME.

Being as you bought the Humidifier out right, ask for a Remstar Pro2 with
C-flex....I think it's about 10 bucks cheaper than the M-Series and it will work with you humidifier
And it has the software card in it.

Patrick, I'm on Medicare. I have UAW-GM BC/BS as my secondary. In my case, at least, BC/BS does have "some" say in that they contract w/DME suppliers and "if" you go to a DME supplier not contracted w/them they do NOT pick up the Medicare co-pay for you. Go to one they are contracted w/and they pick up the Medicare copay and you have no costs to pay. (This is for DME supplies).

The only problem with switching DME's is that if you are with Cigna, you are screwed, They have an exclusive agreement with Apria. The only way around that agreement is to buy the machine outright and then file for reimbursement from Cigna. Be sure and call Cigna and receive prior approval!

I just want to go back to sleep!

When I received my first CPAP machine about 1 1/2 years ago, it was a Remstar Plus with 5000+ hours on it. I wasn't aware that it didn't record detailed data until I bought a card reader and software. At that point I called my DME (a local firm, owned by Rotech) who said that they had no problem with swapping out my Plus for a new Remstar Pro, which they did within a few days.

My insurance (Tricare Prime) buys CPAP machines after about a year of leasing, so that was another reason I wanted the swap. If I was going to own the machine at some point, then I wanted to start out with a fresh one.

I once worked for another Rotech-owned company (non-respiratory stuff) and despite Rotech's legal issues, which I presume are all straightened out by now, I think they're a pretty decent company to deal with. At least I have no real complaints with my local DME at this point.

Thanks. I'm glad somebody appreciated the title. I was proud of it. It was mindset going in. (I can't say literally, having never been in a steel cage death match before. Not that I'll admit anyway... )

Doug.

Doug,

Which Apria do you go to? I go to the one in San Jose and the only person I like there is the receptionist too.
