Something weird is happening...

Post by atruvirgo » Thu Jun 14, 2007 8:00 am

I am feeling like I did when I was having apneas before treatment. I wake up at night and I think the cause is two-fold. I start to mouth breath and I am having apnea. When I mouth breath I think that the sensation of the puffing etc wakes me up and when I have apneas and wake up it's like pre-treatment that sort of gasping feeling. My machine is not data capab;e and whenI inquired the doctor said NO! I don;t need to monitor anything. I had a Holter Monitor test 2 weeks ago because of palpitations but still no call with the results. I can't afford to purchase a data capable machine out of pocket...I'm at his mercy!

Can you afford to feel the way you do?
Can you afford the consequences of improper OSA treatment?
Can you afford to see another doctor?

If mouth leaks are indeed your only issue ... try taping or gluing (polydent) your lips or Ace bandage/chinstrap ... then for a little more $$ there are full face masks ... and if you are lucky, you may be able to train yourself not to mouth leak. I mouth leaked the first week or two of treatment and trained myself not to (but not everyone is able to as I understand it but worth a try for free).

Best of luck ... I hope you find a solution.

You may have to go with a full face mask.

Due to a skin allergy/condition I can't wear a full face. I did pretty well without the mouth breathing until a week ago. I'm still not sure what is causing me to wake up and feel odd.

Morning Debbie/Atruvirgo;

As has been said, you owe it to yourself to get proper treatment. From your posts, it appears that you are (were) a military dependent. If this is the case, you should seek out another doctor for another opinion. Get a copy of your records and get another doctor. Not all are uncaring and want you deprived of important information about and for your own health. Another method is to contact the health care insurance company used by military personnel (I forgot the name we used so many years ago), and ask them about what you can do and get and what the coverage is outside of the base/post hospitals. They should be able to direct you to a local doctor and DME provider.

Take care and fight for your own good health.

Ken

I was able to stop mouth breathing by sucking on a Ricola Sugar-free Lemon-Mint lozenge. At $1.49 a bag at Trader Joe's it is worth a try. I think that sucking got my mouth in a good closed position and enabled me to get into a deep sleep where I wasn't moving anything. You do need to be careful of inhaling the lozenge. I hold mine in place with my tongue.

There is no scientific evidence to support my theory but that it works for me.

My son, stepson and stepdaughter are military. I have BC/BS. I have a physical with my G.P. in a few weeks and ask her about a different specialist. I did find out today that the holter monitor test showed some skipped and extra beats. Nothing serious and can be corected with medication if I am too bothered by it.
