Removing Mask While Asleep

Post by atruvirgo » Tue Jun 12, 2007 7:28 am

The past 3 nights I have woken up and found the mask in bed with me and still blowing. None of the straps are unhooked but, I ammanageing to take it off w/o even remembering. This is so strange.

Debbie,

I've woken up before, especially if the mask is too tight, trying to rip the thing off my face. Or there are several nights where I've half woken up at about 4:30 and thinking the night was over took the mask off, looked at the clock, and then fallen back to sleep without

My problem now is I need to make it a habit not to lie down ANYWHERE without my mask. Several nights in the last couple weeks, I've fallen asleep - on the couch, in bed playing video game, working on the PC, etc. - trying like heck to stay awake and finish what I'm doing. Once I even ended up sleeping the whole night through without CPAP Boy did I ever pay for THAT the next day!

Most of the time what I do is when I get in bed, even if I'm going to work on the computer or play games, I put the mask on. The only problem is I have a FFM and I can't wear my glasses with the mask

Some people have suggested getting used to the mask by wearing it around the house - while reading, watching TV, etc.

I read another thread where someone suggested standing in front of the mirror or even just talking (out loud is best) to yourself saying several times (3 at least) "I will NOT take my mask off while I am sleeping. I will only take my mask off when I wake up to my alarm in the morning." You know, power of positive thinking and programming our minds...

Best of luck!

When my machine arrived, I made one adjustment IMMEDIATELY.
As someone in this forum suggested, I turned ON the "Mask Off Alarm".
It hasn't gone off yet, so I don't know how loud it is.

Check your machine menus, you may have that option available.

Good Luck,

Some have had luck taping the mask to their face. Just use a couple of pcs of tape and tape the headgear to your face. The pain(although mild) may be enough to remind you not to remove the mask.
Do you find anything about the mask bothering you? Does it leak or hurt, is it too tight, do you feel like you aren't getting enough air, or can't exhale?
If it isn't a problem with the mask, you will probably find that you stop removing it over time. If it is a problem with the mask, we can try to help fix it.

I just wake up and it lying there in the bed. Never even remember doing it or have a clue how long it has been off.

I've been on xPAP for almost 18 months,,, I used to ake the mask off and turn machine off,, and never once remember doing it,,, in just the past few weeks I have had success,, I have a LONG list of masks,,,, the key seems to be the machine. I recently got a Bi-PAP,, I have NOT removed the mask once since. I had a CPAP with C-Flex,, that didn't help. Go see you doc and talk about the possibility of trying a Bi-PAP.
