Use S8 w/ non-ResMed mask?

Post by Gatorbec » Sat May 05, 2007 8:41 am

Hello everyone...I'm new so if this question has already been asked & answered, please forgive me!

I have a ResMed S8 Elite. My DME originally gave me an Ultra Mirage Full Face Mask. I hated it. It was leaking like crazy (I'm a side/back sleeper and I'm all over the place when I sleep) so I did some reseach and decided to try the Fisher & Paykel FlexiFit 432. I love it!!! It is so comfortable and I haven't gotten any "high leak" messages on the machine.

BUT: I just got the clinician's manual for my S8 and in it, it says that you can only use the S8 with ResMed masks and that it isn't compatible with other manufacturer's masks. Has anyone else combined machines and masks of different manufacturers? Am I doing something dangerous by not using a ResMed mask with the S8?

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.

A lot of people use non-resmed masks with their S8 cpap and autopap machines. I'm not a doctor, but I'd say use whatever mask suits you.

Glad to hear you found a mask you like...that's the biggest key of all to being able to "do" cpap treatment, imho.

Nah, no problem at all. I'd venture a guess that most of us using a Resmed xPAP use masks by manufacturers other than Resmed. What Resmed DOES do that the other xPAP manufacturers DON'T do is make allowances for the accepted leak rate for their masks and automatically subtracts that accepted leak rate from the reported leak rate.

You can do one of two things to get a somewhat more accurate reported leak rate is select the Resmed mask setting for the mask most like the one you use, i.e. select the Resmed full face mask setting if you use a full face mask, etc. Or select Standard for other masks, or Swift if you use a nasal pillow interface, etc.

Or you can check your accepted mask leak rate on the literature accompanying your mask at your pressure against the Resmed mask leak rates and choose the Resmed mask setting most closely rated to your mask's leak rate at your pressue.

I had emailed ResMed to ask the question of which setting to use for a non ResMed mask about 2 weeks ago. I emailed them because my mother's DME told her to use the standard setting on her S8 Elite for her F&P 431 full face mask. My thought was to use the UMFF setting instead. Two people from ResMed replied saying that the UMFF setting should be used for a non ResMed FF mask and the standard setting is for all other non ResMed Nasal masks. Any other pillow mask should go by the Swift setting.

So that's what I heard from the horse's mouth...better that end than......lol!

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES! This message board is a lifesaver, I've learned more here about CPAP, sleep apnea, etc. than I ever got from my ENT or the DME.

Aw shucks, now y'all have the entire forum blushing. Sad commentary on the sleep profession, isn't it? I wonder if they would even have the decency to be embarrassed if they were to hear how many times that is said by newbies to CPAP therapy fortunate enough to find these forums?
