Hooray for my Husband - Off topic

Post by azaloune » Sat Apr 14, 2007 3:30 pm

I just have to share because I am SOOOO VERY PROUD of my Husband, I want to shout it from the rooftops.

On Thursday, my husband's day off, He got up early to go to the grocery store for dog food. About 3 blocks from home, he saw an 11 year old boy from the neighborhood under attack by 2 PIT BULLS!

Not thinking of his own safety, he made every attempt to get the dogs away from the boy. At first, he tried honking the horn and running them down with the car. Then, he picked up the boy (no, my husband is not a big man or very strong) and put him on the other side of the fence he had been trapped against. As my husband was running back to his car, the dogs got a hold on his calf's and he ended up on the ground. Since he is ex-military, he said later he took a training at some point that told him to roll on the ground away from the dogs. That is what he did. He rolled back to his car. When he got back in the car, he called the police.

When the police, fire dept., and ambulance got here, the dogs were still here. The police shot the dogs as the were charging the new arrivals. 1 dog was killed on the scene, the 2nd dog ran away wounded, was located by animal control and later destroyed.

The 11 year old boy had been bitten twice, and suffers from 4 puncture wounds. My husband has 2 very bad bites, 1 small bite, and 4 "road rash" scrapes, 1 of those the entirety of his right knee.

The little boy is fine, the hospital picked up the tab for my husband's bill. 3 out of 4 TV stations in town have called him a hero. He went back into work this morning, they threw him a party, complete with breakfast and gave him 3 days off with pay that will not be charged to his vacation or sick leave. His boss now calls him Superman.

The owners of the dogs have been charged with 2 counts of "Failure to Confine Animals" and will be paying a $350 fine, which in my opinion is not enough, but, they are renters that have lots of roommates and are not employed, so it is not worth suing them. They have no possessions worth attaching but will be watched by the police and animal control.

The health department is testing the dogs for rabies and we will be notified of the outcome.

We live in a private neighborhood that does not allow 6 different breeds of dogs due to them being labeled as vicious. Unfortunately, the owners of the dogs live in the neighborhood next to us that is not a private neighborhood.

What my husband did, was a very brave and selfless act of charity. We did not know the little boy or his family, but he is a neighbor that lives a block or 2 away and we have seen him around. He thinks my husband is the coolest person he has ever met.

I am so very proud of him, I can not contain my joy at the love I feel and my pride in him at this totally selfless act he has preformed for another soul. The fact that he saved a child, that we didn't even know, is the most wonderful thing he could have done.

Thank you for allowing me to post my ramblings of pride, and thanks for reading!

Wow!

You have every reason to be so full of pride for your husband, he sure deserves it. People, young and old, have died from attacking dogs. I don't know if he explained his training trick to the media but I sure hope so. I found that rolling trick most interesting, and I'm sure it will stick with me. So it may well be that he has saved potential future victims just by relaying his story and explaining how he saved himself as well. He should be proud, just as you are. Thanks for the story! Congratulate him for me!

Wow, what a wonderful story. And one with a happy ending (other than the bites). No wonder you are proud of your husband.

... Super Hero ...

Good for your husband, I hope the dogs check out to be well, Maybe the dogs owners, need a injection of Rabies, just for good measure, we all know they aren't cured of their non-responsibility. Jim

azaloune,

You have every right to be so very proud of your Husband.

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful act of bravery.

I am glad your husband got the recognition he deserves.

I hope for his sake and the boy's the dogs do not have rabies.

I pray for a speedy recovery for both your husband and the boy.

I am glad the dogs were taken down. It pains me to see in the news that so often the dogs are spared because they did not mean to bite.

I can do this, I will do this.

My disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, nor have I ever worked in the health care field Just my personal opinions.

You should be proud and I am proud of him too! I would hope that if me or someone I love was being attacked someone like your husband would come to my aid. I love animals of all breeds and sizes. I really feel like most bad dogs have bad owners and certainly you are a bad owner if you have a dog that could harm someone and you allow it to run free. If you have a big dog you should be extra vigilant about keeping that dog contained because even if they are harmless, big dogs scare people and can cause accidents.
Anyway your husband deserves to be bragged on and I appreciate the story!

Reminds me of an old song...

Don't remember the artist, but part of the song said it best...
"What a man, what a man, what a mighty good man!"

Brag on.

Bravo for your brave and caring husband, he is a real hero. I pray for the speedy recovery for both he and the little boy. I don't believe in Breed Banning but banning of ,poor, uncaring, incompetent dog owners is top in my book. I have been training and showing dogs for last 30 years and can assure you the owner, or breeder of this particular dog is the culprit here. This makes your husband a real hero in my book! God Bless...Ellen

Thank you all for your best wishes and congratulations. My hubby, Superman, is doing well. He is still stiff and sore, but, we have started to see healing in the road rash and the small bite. The swelling has gone down in the large bites and we continue to watch for signs of infection.

We are just taking it easy and letting things heal.

Thank you again!
