Woke up to find I had ripped open mouth tape with my mouth

Just curious if anyone can guess at what was happening around 5 AM to me. I woke up at 5 AM or so to discover that my paper mouth tape had been ripped open by my mouth. I am surprised I was even able to do this. The tape was still firmly attached on all sides, it just had a hole where me opening my mouth had ripped it open.





Oscar shows some strange looking flow rate right before that, and the highest AHI of the night.










In the past I had an Airsense 10 power brick fail and randomly stop delivering power. I woke up suddenly one time when it did this - machine was dark, would not respond to any controls. Unplugging the brick and plugging it back in and other fiddling - probably just letting a few minutes pass - resulted in it coming back to life. In Oscar you could clearly see all reading drop off completely and a gap where there was no data since the machine was getting no power. Looking over past data I could see this had happened several times before in previous weeks with me sleeping through it. Replacing the power brick solved it.

I thought maybe that had happened again and I forced open my mouth while asleep due to the machine cutting off, but the data shows no such gap, so I am pretty sure whatever happened here, it was not the machine failing. But I don't know how to interpret that strange flow rate around 4:50 - 5:00 AM.

Seems like a one-off event, just a curiosity, and am wondering if anyone has run into this before.

I am not surprised you can do this. The tape should be a suggestion to keep your mouth closed. If you really want to open your mouth, you should be able to. If you can't, the tape is unacceptable.

That is not true for everyone.
I need tape because without it, pressure coming from the back of my mouth blows my lips open, and I have to tape in order to keep that from happening. Nothing volitional about those opening lips. Yes, it does give me chipmunk cheeks - but I haven't found a better solution. I do sleep with an FFM sometimes, but my sleep is much better with a pillows mask and mouth tape.
I've been mouth taping for some 20 years - I've had tape go loose at the corners of my mouth, but never did it tear.

So: maybe the OP should consider another type of tape.
I used to use 3M's hypoallergenic paper tap - needed baby oil to remove it, and if I wasn't patient, the removal could hurt my skin. I switched to silicone based tapes for sensitive skin when I learned about them.

The problem with sleep disordered breathing : it wakes you up when you can't breath.
When your mouth is taped and you can't breathe, it wakes you up and you use the tabs to pull it off quickly.
The above assumes your brains is functioning as it should, and is not under the influence of narcotics, alcohol and the likes.
