Hi all, over the last year I gained some weight and had to get back on my Auto CPAP machine. As the weight increased I settled at around a min pressure of 13.5 with flex 3. Years ago I was diagnosed as having higher than normal RERA events, but normal AHI and got the CPAP that changed my life. I believe I have UARS more than standard sleep apena symptoms and my previous symptoms of brain fog, tiredness, warm body feeling, etc. are always under control with CPAP and without CPAP when my weight is 15lbs lower than current weight. However, I am a stomach sleeper and toss and turn frequently regardless of CPAP therapy or not.
A few months ago I started noticing earworms (aka stuck song syndrome) where a certain song you recently heard or from the past keeps repeating in your head to the point that it gets distressing. This symptom is usually worse in the morning and often gone in late evening. This symptom along with rumination, unwanted/intrusive thoughts is generally associated with OCD, ADHD, brain injury, PTSD, trauma, high anxiety, sleep deprivation, some medications etc. The songs themselves are most common in "average" people dealing with high stress, worry, anxiety. I do worry often and have some occasional anxiety, but none of these other conditions and have a great happy life. I am just curious if something is causing stress on the brain or body (due to oxygen deprivation) during sleep which can definitely cause these symptoms, despite feeling normal otherwise.
I could be mistaking cause and effect, but I believe I have noticed that when I lose a little weight (3-5lbs) and drop the CPAP pressure that the stuck songs get worse. When I increase the pressure I have noticed they seem to be milder and almost gone. I also noticed that if I don't sleep well and lie awake half the night then the stucks songs are gone or milder in the morning but will increase after a few days of poor sleep. When I sleep deeply the next day the songs can often be more bothersome. Sometimes increasing the pressure results in higher AHI (especially with a new tighter P10 mask/strap). Attached are some images showing good/bad days in terms of the stuck songs. If anyone can see anything in this data that might help me I would be forever thankful since increasing the pressure to a min of 14 or 14.5 doesn't always seem to do the trick. I can provide additional data if needed.
1st image: Min pressure 10 (intense stuck songs symptoms)
2nd image: Min pressure 14 (almost symptom free)
3rd image: Min pressure 13.5 (average day with mild-moderate symptoms)
Earworms (stuck songs) and intrusive thoughts - UARS / sleep apena connection?
Re: Earworms (stuck songs) and intrusive thoughts - UARS / sleep apena connection?
How to Get Rid of Stuck Song Syndrome
To alleviate the discomfort of stuck song syndrome, consider the following strategies:
Listen to the entire song: This can provide a sense of closure and break the loop.
Engage in distraction: Activities like reading, working on a puzzle, or having a conversation can help divert your mind.
Chew gum: Studies suggest that chewing gum can reduce earworms by blocking the subvocal rehearsal component of auditory short-term memory.
Replace the song: Try to consciously replace the earworm with another catchy song. <====== ok, this one is stupid. Replace the earworm with another earworm? Perhaps a song that you like better? Stupid.
Acceptance: Sometimes, the more you try to suppress an earworm, the stronger it becomes. Accepting it can be more effective than actively trying to block the song.
If earworms are significantly impacting your daily life or causing distress, it may be beneficial to consult with a mental healthcare professional.

Most of the time when I wake up, I have a song going through my head. It doesn't bother me in the least as it's always a song that I like.
Imagine, if you will, waking up and having MacArther Park running around your brain. Yes, you will need professional help at that point.
If you don't know that song, consider yourself lucky! Do NOT look it up! You'll be sorry...

Anyone watching the Olympics? I just watched Alysa Liu win gold skating to that tune. A real testament to her ability that she can overcome the worst song ever (Dave Barry agrees). I expect I'll lay awake now worrying about the weather and where I left the cake.

Could be related. UARS and sleep disruptions can subtly affect brain function and memory processing, which might make repetitive thoughts or earworms more noticeable.
