Looking for some opinions on rental/purchase/use for Apap

Post by digitalsilence » Sat Jan 10, 2026 10:11 am

Hello everyone,

I am very new in kind of stuck on what I should do really

Rotech offers free rental with my insurance but I've read horror stories with them and wondering if I'm better off just buying a unit.

I can get an air sense 11 new 606$ or used with 400hrs for 280$

I do have a prescription on hand I did a sleep test through CPAP.com and I assume from what I've read I can adjust the used unit to my needs.

Just looking for general opinions on any of the three options.

I am leaning towards used and taking my insurance cover accessories.

Someone pays for the CPAP machines. Where does that money come from?

Taxes.....

Unless the OP doesn't pay any taxes for any reason then I guess he pays for it .....just in a different not in your face way.

There's a reason the UK has one of the highest tax rates of all the other countries.

Kinda like someone here in the USA who says they don't pay anything for supplies because insurance pays it all....someone has to pay for the insurance.

Not only does he pay for his own indirectly, he also pays for everyone else's much the same as we do in the US through insurance or taxes.

well yep.. we pay through our taxes on what we earn... so we don't have to find money for health insurance and don't have to find £700 for CPAP kit... our NHS is far from perfect, but I'm glad we have it in the UK. I'm afraid we pay a lot in tax because we have a Labour government who are hopeless.. lol sorry, got political. But seriously, if people don't get CPAPs when they need it, as we know, it could lead to more expensive health costs in the future or even early death...sad if that happens just because some people can't afford it.

Lol I mean I pay taxes in the US. But I also pay a high premium. So "free" is probably not the best use of the word. But no additional cost on supplies. Assume they don't charge me anyways and try to commit fraud. ( Which apparently that vendor does)

Ignoring the discussion on taxes and insurance.

I've had 8 machines over the years. 3 were through insurance the rest I purchased out of pocket, used or new. Nothing wrong with rent to own if your insurance picks up the rental and copay, you can always change suppliers for supplies later on. But if you have to wait a long time or there are other problems there's nothing wrong with out of pocket as long as its affordable. My basic rule is that getting the right CPAP equipment is worth at least as much as my mattress and bedding because it does more for my sleep. The main thing is to make sure that you have a doctor who will keep up the prescription for supplies and that they accept whatever situation you have with your machine. When I'm not using the DME supplied machines I take the machine to my pulmonologist so they can sign off with insurance that I'm compliant.
