Anyone have an old crappy CPAP they'd like to sell?

Post by wrybread » Tue Jan 06, 2026 12:32 am

I'm a CPAP user and use a nice modern CPAP. But I also use a CPAP machine to keep my wood stove stoked up. I attach the tube to a copper pipe to blast air into the stove, works great. The fire blazes and it's infinitely easier than blowing into a tube to get things stoked up. But alas the old cpap machine I was using for this purpose for years just died.

Does anyone happen to have an old CPAP machine they'd like to sell? Condition is unimportant, the only thing it has to do is blow air into a fire, not for human consumption so hygene doesn't even matter.

If you'd like to contact me directly I'm wrybread at gmail dot com.

Would be shipping to California.

We've had a woodstove in the house for years and years. I installed it around 30 years ago and we use it quite often. Our stove doesn't have a tube to blow in, just vents.

Anyways, if you can't get a CPAP machine for your purposes perhaps a dedicated blower would work? Even one of those blowers used to inflate rafts or air beds or toys would work?

It takes less time to do a thing right than to explain why you did it wrong.

Yup but the nice thing about a cpap is it's so quiet. Those air mattress blowers are NOISY. And there's the extra points for the goofiness of it, everyone cracks up.

Also I don't need it often, but when I do it's sure nice to have. Stokes the fire from embers to raging even with marginal wood. Highly recommended.

I'm kicking myself for not picking up more when I saw this box of ancient Remstar Plus CPAPs at a local thriftshop for $5 each. I picked up 2, maybe 3 years ago. They each had a good run but are now both dead. It's this one in the middle, but any would work:

If that falls through, when we're camping we use a 200 MPH leaf blower.

Hey, go big or go home.

I will, hopefully, have my old one to share. I'm getting a new one. I'm in Michigan so you would have to pay the postage. Not sure the best way to accomplish the payment.

The fans used to cool computers are more suited for feeding a wood stove than a CPAP machine. They are also quieter.

Tried that. The nice thing about the CPAP fan is I can feed it into a brass tube and insert the tube to the fire when needed, and where needed. I wasn't able to get anywhere near the same performance from any other fan. The CPAP works amazingly well.

I also use the CPAP (and brass pipe) system on my outdoor firepit. It cuts waaay down on the smoke, since smoke is caused by incomplete combustion and the increased air causes much better combustion. And sure there are fire pits that cause some convection to bring more air into the fire but they obscure the fire so you can't see much of it, which is a big downside in my opinion. Much easier just to fire up an old cpap and blow it into the fire.

Here's the system in action:

Note the valve at end of the pipe, that's to turn down the air flow without going into the clinician's menu every time. Works so well. Still smoky as of this pic but I probably just put it in the fire, within a couple of minutes the smoke will be way down.

I use a computer fan on my meat smoker to pull air over the wood pellets. For the same reason, to get better combustion, although in this case the problem with too much smoke is that it's bitter. This gets a nice thin smoke.
