Basically they are saying don't worry about it if you use a nasal mask and no mouth tape and you end up mouth breathing. I have never encountered anything like this before. Would a real sleep tech really say this?Registered Polysomnographic Technologist
Yes, it's ok to vent pressure out your mouth at times. It's not a loss of treatment pressure is called oral venting. Your body has different pressure requirements based on stage of sleep(REM or Non REM) and positions(side and back) and sometimes when you don't need the highest pressure, air vents or your mouth.
What? Mouth breathing is ok?

Just read this on Reddit. It sounded like complete nonsense but the tagline made me do a double take. Is this person serious?

You think that there aren't idiots every where and in every field???
There are piss poor sleep techs (assuming he/she is really a sleep tech) out there as well.
I had one of them at my titration sleep study. Total moron and an asshole liar to boot.
Just because he/she spouts it doesn't make it so.

Re: What? Mouth breathing is ok?
No problem... if you're using full-face of course.
When I was on nasal (Zest) I'd start the night by breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth... climbing stairs etc can make me out of breath... so that's an easy way to avoid re-breathing. Before I got treatment I was having bad panic attacks... they've gone thankfully... but too much CO2 can trigger the feeling.
Now that I'm older and fatter I'm having more UARS... EFLs etc. Position-related apnea... on my left side it's worse... and I have to toss n turn as a side sleeper with bad shoulders. When your upper airway is blocked often the best thing is to allow your mouth to breathe... that's why I moved to my Simplus FF mask. I'm having a lot more loss of muscle tone during REM... mouth leaks, jaw drops, tongue falling back etc.
If the air is blowing out your mouth through your nose you're not being treated and you're drying out your airway... and, using up your humidifier too. Cover-roll stretch tape is the fix if that's happening without a FF mask.

Re: What? Mouth breathing is ok?
lots of folk here use mouth tape. i don't, but i do use scuncis. things along these lines are often used to avoid mouth breathing. i'm surprised this is the first you've heard of it.

Re: What? Mouth breathing is ok?
Really wish they made that blue sensitive skin tape in 1 inch width instead of 1/2".

Re: What? Mouth breathing is ok?
I have tried layering it like that but it seems often saliva makes it come apart in the middle of the night. Alternately if I use a lot of layers I can make a strong one but then I can't open my mouth which kind of defeats the purpose, might as well use the 1 inch micropore tape. I like the blue tape because with a single strip I can force my mouth open instantly if I need to without even needing to use my hands, but it's so narrow that often it does not last the night. A one inch one would be perfect. Frustrating they don't make it.
