Is it just me but are CPAP masks getting smaller and LOUDER?

Post by Justin Case » Sat Jun 17, 2023 4:15 am

I'm using legacy Resmed masks such as Mirage Activa and Activa LT. The former has been discontinued but I purchased replacement parts when still available. I worry the same will happen soon with the LT. I tried all the current nasal masks and pillows out there. None are suitable. Sometimes the fit is terrible (professionally fitted at the DME) when sleeping due to movement and they're all noisy as heck. I always wear earplugs to sleep.

I'm curious what are CPAP users such as myself supposed to do?

In general, CPAP masks have gotten smaller and lighter in weight. This is a good thing.

I use a white (actually brown) noise to muffle any vent noise. It works great for me. Even for a person who doesn't use CPAP, it can be very relaxing and of course masks extraneous noises.

Once we become used to the sounds of cpap, outside noise becomes less noticeable.
Many of us sleep better.

It's been more than 20 years!

There's no way I'll ever get used to the noise especially mask noise from newer masks. That's the point. My DME said it's physics. The smaller the mask, the more noise. Us light sleepers continue to be disadvantaged.

The mesh exhaust of the p10 is nearly silent.
The sleepweaver cloth masks are also very quiet.
White noise can help those who are unusually sensitive to sounds.
Mask liners help muffle the leaks next to the face.
Whatever it takes to use cpap--do that.
Accept the fact that many DMEs are full of fecal matter.

DMEs are famous for being FOS.

If folded properly, a cloth diaper can suffice for headgear (for a DME)

The problem is that the machines got quieter, so now we hear the masks.

Just sayin'.

But I consider the frog to be the expert on all things small and loud.

Unless its leaking, my current mask is silent. My wife can't hear the mask or the machine at all.

My husband bitches about my snoring, the mask, etc, but that's on HIM.
He "can't hear me" when I'm talking to him--so I figure it's selective.
I sympathize, and go back to sleep.
I promise him that I will be quieter when I'm gone.

On behalf of all husbands, I would like to say that we have to complain about something now and then, just to prove that we're still paying attention.
