snoring with a cpap!?

Post by jsmith1984 » Mon Mar 26, 2007 2:01 pm

Well I'va had the cpap for almot a week. I have been sleeping with it every night, and I do have to say it is really comfortable. I still had a little problem snoring though. My titrated pressure was 5-15 (with autoset) so I bumped up the lower to 6.5. My girlfriend said I had a gurgling noise coming from my throat. So I lowered it back to 5.2, still had snoring, so I raised it to 6 even. I think I was quiet last night, but I did have rainout ( which is weird the first time) because I had the humidifer up too high. My titration sudy said I stopped snoring when I got to 7. Why do you think I had a gurgling sound?

Perhaps you had some mouth leakage...Did you wake up with a dry mouth?

Also rainout,(water in the hose) will cause gurgling sounds from the hose, lower the Hh temp and drain the hose back into the HH. Keep the XPAP lower than your head. Raising the room temp, or using a heated hose also helps. Jim

If you are new to cpap one of the most important things you need to learn is that cpap does not work when you breath through your mouth without a full face mask. Air would not go from outside your mouth to your lungs unless your airway pressure was negative (below atmospheric). CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. NOT NEGATIVE. Ask your girlfriend to watch you sleep sometime and see if you breath through your mouth with cpap. If you do you need to eliminate mouth breathing or you will have problems on a regular basis.

I am a nose breather, my girlfriend said when I make the noise, my mouth appears to be closed. however last night I was just barely asleep and I noticed the noise. it looks like when I breath out my lips shake, like someone does when they are frustrated. I turned the pressure up a bit (from 6.2 to 6. last night before this happened, and it seems to have gotten worse. I may try lowering it to 6.0 and see what happens.

Lip flutter! This means you are losing pressure out your mouth. You could try a chin strap, but most have no luck with them. I tape my mouth shut.

Hi jsmith,

Sorry - but Brenda is right. What makes your lips flutter like that is expelling air through them. You're mouth leaking. That means you're losing pressure - and therefore your therapy is less effective (and this will also cause the dry throat you're experience). Your options are trying a chin strap (which works for very few people, and most likely won't work for you, as all it does is keep your jaw shut - which you seem to already be doing), changing to a full face mask, or taping/using Polident strips.

Good luck!
