CVS HealthHubs

Post by Holocron » Wed Oct 19, 2022 8:14 am

CVS Drugstore has a newer service at select locations called HealthHubs. Per their website, they deal with sleep apnea and CPAP at these locations. Has any one had any experience with them as a DME CPAP supplier?

They won't be on your insurance and their prices are full retail.
I have seen limited masks and supplies and no machines.

Maybe the competition will force some of the evil, brick-and-mortar DMEs to straighten out their act.

I think you're thinking of the usual CVS, which I was also surprised to see had CPAP supplies on the shelves.

The HealthHub seems to be a beefed up MinuteClinic. I have a call in to ask them about it.

We have a Health Hub a mile from my home. It has been there for about 7-8 months. This is the only one I have seen.

I would think that how "great" it might be would depend on

1....is the CVS considered an in network or out of network when it comes to insurance and does it matter to a person if insurance pays their share or not. Remember that just because a place of business has something you want doesn't mean your insurance will pay for it.

2...now if not worried about insurance money and as a source for something that is broken or maybe someone is on a trip and they forgot something (been there and done that myself) then something we need NOW and CVS having it available....priceless even at full retail.

Fair enough. I never frequented CVS until recently. They're more common in the area we just moved too Aetna (owned by CVS) is our new insurance provider.

I'm having a difficult time finding a new provider in the area, without a lot of hoops and needless referrals. So honestly when I saw this, it seemed like a potentially "easy" solution to the problem.

Happy to take recommendations for online CPAP suppliers that will work with insurance OR someone in the NYC / Westchester County area.

CVS is going to act just like any other DME if your insurance covers it. They are not in this to make CPAP therapy more affordable. You aren't going to be able to walk into a CVS HealthHub and pick a mask to go home with unless you have a prescription and they take your insurance.

They are in this to make money, just like any other DME. They are trying to capture a market by being a one stop shop. They will provide the testing, prescription, and equipment and supplies. We know how well that works out when the prescriber has a conflict of interest. The cheapest, limited stuff because they will get paid the same as any other DME. I'm going to bet on Chinese knock-off machines, non-OEM parts and supplies, and a very limited formulary of masks.

I have seen a limited selection of cpap supplies at a truck stop.
I recognize the financial parallels between truck stops and DMEs.
And now CVS is in the mix.

Last month when I was in search of a DME that had ResMed Autoset available, the medicare website search showed 2 CVS locations in my area, that were supposedly approved for CPAP -
BUT, when I went to the CVS to inquire, they said they only accept very few insurance plans and that they do not accept medicare . . .

I called medicare about how CVS said they don't accept medicare for CPAP equipment but it shows as an approved DME on the medicare website, and proceeded to ask if I would be able to get reimbursed, and they said yes if I filled out paperwork and make sure they sell it to me for the "medicare approved price". . .

I didn't buy from CVS, as I didn't want to have to pay out of pocket first and then hope that my paperwork gets approved for reimbursement. . . (and I was very glad my regular DME was able to get my resmed autoset much sooner than they had initially told me. . .)

Emergencies can be anticipated--plan ahead--with backup supplies.
You can't afford not to.
