Sleeping in a recliner

Post by cherylann » Tue Oct 11, 2022 9:08 pm

Do I need to use my machine if I sleep in a recliner?

Yes.
We suggest a recliner as a last resort if your cpap is AWOL.
A last resort--but never a viable replacement.

My first thought is yes. I have a friend who even when sitting upright starts snoring and snorting as soon as they starts to doze. I, on the other hand, have no breathing distress if I sleep in a recliner with the back nearly upright with the footrest up and with a c-pillow under my chin. If I vary from any part of that I will have problems. Better to be safe than sorry unless you can be reasonably sure you don't have breathing trouble in the recliner.

sure, as long as you don't mind sleeping with untreated apnea.

and as long as you don't mind sleeping like crap.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

If I fall asleep sitting completely upright--i.e. in the passenger seat of a car or in my recliner watching TV, I IMMEDIATELY have apnea. A recliner chair is not a treatment or a cure.

Quit looking for outs. Do the hard work to get to be able to use your CPAP consistently whenever you sleep. Yes, it's HARD. The alternative is strokes, heart attacks, dementia, and death. Maybe not right away. But that's your future if you don't use your CPAP.

Choose your hard.

Geez!!! I'm just asking a question!! I've been a CPAP user for over 10 years. I'm temporarily without a bed and trying to decide whether to sleep on the sofa or in the recliner.

I remember now why I stayed away from this website for so long. People can be so hateful!!!

Original question seemed to be posed as recliner versus PAP, not recliner versus sofa while continuing PAP. Posters may have been attempting to answer the apparent either-or nature of the wording of the original post.

In a recliner, on the sofa, on the floor, or hanging upside-down from the ceiling, PAP is needed for someone with moderate-to-severe OSA.

Recliner tends to put you on your back, but elevated. Sofa often allows better side-sleeping. On the floor can be hard on the bones. Hanging from the ceiling upside-down can exacerbate GERD. Or so I've heard. From a friend.
The people who confuse "entomology" and "etymology" really bug me beyond words.

The prone position (Falcon position) is more effective than a recliner. http://www.uarsrelief.com/sleeppositions.html

But, you might find it easier to sleep in a recliner and use your CPAP .

Except maybe in certain pockets of polite society in parts of Canada, Britain, and Japan.

My theory is that it has something to do with the high quality of the tea.

Although, of course, I would never tell anyone that directly.

Just don't tell some people anything except what they want to hear.
