Stroke and need help

Post by Cranksberry » Fri Jun 17, 2022 2:17 pm

I am caring for my husband who had a stroke. He is on Ng tube and just got fitted with a bipap. I am facing 2 issue
1. He is using F&P Vitera but I am facing leakage especially at Ng tube area. Is there a mask that is more suitable for those on tube feeding

2. Even on bipap, his oxygen level fluctuates up and down to 70% and up again throughout the night and I was told that likely there is central apnea. Anyone experienced this before? I am going nuts everytime I see the oxygen go down to below 85%

Welcome to the forum. I googled around about your first question and came up with two suggestions following links from the National Health Service in Great Britain.

The first suggestion is to pad the tube and the skin underneath the tube with a silicone dressing or other material to minimise air leakage and pressure on the skin.

The second suggestion is to use an accessory like the one you'll see at these two sites:

https://www.usa.philips.com/healthcare/ ... ccessories

About your second question: it would be helpful to know more about how your husband's nights are going. Is your bi-level machine by any chance a ResMed Aircurve VAuto? If so, you can get some information from the screen on the machine.

First you will need to enter the clinical menu. You can do that by pressing and holding the home button and the round dial for a few seconds. You'll see the clinical menu option pop up. Click on that, then scroll down to find a place where you can change the display settings for your screen. Select the option for fuller information, and be sure the reporting period will be for one day. (Sorry, I'm not near my machine at the moment; if you try to do this and find it doesn't make sense, let me know and I can check it out on my machine later today.)

Here is what would be useful to know:

EPAP minimum and maximum settings
Pressure support minimum and maximum settings
Total AHI
AI
Central index.

What a complicated and difficult time for you and your husband. My best wishes for success in getting through it.

Looking forward to hearing more from you.
