Distilled Water Shortage?

Post by mottzzz » Thu Feb 03, 2022 12:49 pm

Is anyone else finding it more difficult to find distilled water in stores? The shelves where I am near DC seem to be pretty empty lately.

Yes, I've noticed that where I live too. I'll go to the store and whole distilled water section will be wiped out. I've started buying multiple bottles at once now to make sure I have it.

If I lived in DC, I would move to Texas. The water would be a good enough excuse

My one and only grocery store us a smaller WalMart and I see all sorts of product shortages and/or blank shelves every time I go. Some things more so than others.
Bottled water...hit or miss it seems no matter what kind it is. I have seen bare shelves but rarely totally bare for water. Most of the time it's just a limited supply inventory on water.

Other things I haven't seen in weeks and weeks....like heavy whipping cream.
Meats are hit and miss as well. I have seen the chicken department totally bare.

If no distilled water I will either use bottled water which I almost always have a stockpile of since I use it in the Keurig since my well water kills a coffee maker in 6 months and the Keurig is just to expensive to replace twice a year.
Or I just use tap water. It's not the end of the world to not use distilled water.

Tap water doesn't hurt anything. I just empty the tank, put in a teaspoon or two of citric acid powder, add water, and let it sit for a while. Then I use an old toothbrush to swish around in there, rinse, and it's good as new. I used the same water tank in my old Dreamstation for almost two years, and it is still good as new.

You can use white vinegar to do the same thing, but I did not like the smell it left behind, so I switched to citric acid powder. Lots of folks use the vinegar though, and it doesn't bother them.

I haven't noticed a shortage of bottled water since the first lock down but beef, milk, and chicken cases have all been bare at various times. Other products are hit and miss as well. Luckily we have a ro system so I can use filtered water if I need to.

If the vinegar smell bothers you, have a nice dill pickle before bed.
I recommend a lovely Claussen kosher mini.
You will not even notice the vinegar.
If Claussens are unavailable in your area, look for a quality Lithuanian half sour.

Amazon Fresh has distilled water, only $0.99 per gallon. I have it delivered to my door.
