Any suggestions on how to temporarily get a CPAP machine?

Post by kong » Thu Nov 18, 2021 12:01 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to temporarily get a CPAP machine. I have a RESMED S10 APAP that makes loud noises. I called the DME. They said that I could send it in to get fixed, but that it would take about three weeks. They said that normally they'd first send a loaner, however, due to a shortage of CPAP machines due to the problem with Phillip's machines, they haven't been able to send loaners for several months. Any suggestions? I don't want to give up my APAP for three weeks since I have severe sleep apnea. When I had two sleep studies almost ten years ago, my AHI was 40 in one and 70 in the other.

I am sorry you are in this situation.
This is why we preach the need for backup machines.
You should prevail on your sleep doctor (if you have one)
to point you to a local source.
Good luck.

There a few users on this board that sell low-hours-used cpap machines. This would not be temporary, it's a purchase. LSAT comes to mind.

In some parts of the world cpap machines are frequently rented out but not in the US unfortunately.
Renting machines has never been something done often in the US even before the Respironics recall which has ended up causing massive shortages in cpap machines world wide...so even less likely to find a rental program now and it was never easy in the US before the recall.

I would suggest investing in a used machine and then keep it as back up once your machine gets fixed.
You could probably find a decent used machine for about what you would end up paying for renting for 3 or 4 weeks anyway.

Craigslist, secondwindcpap.com, friend who might have a spare, forum member who has a spare machine to sell...
It doesn't even have to be the exact model you are currently using...an older similar machine could get you by and maybe be real cheap.
Like maybe a S9 Elite or AutoSet...older model but still does the job and not as expensive as the AirSense models.

Yeah, I saw that after I submitted but didn't/couldn't see it while I was composing...so just went and edited my response.
Old woman...short memory thing.

If it were me I would shop craigslist for a cheap used S9 of some sort.
Maybe look at secondwindcpap.com as well.
Or hit up a friend or family member who might have a spare I could borrow if I knew of one...but for me...I don't have anyone close.

i'm really worried about the future for sleep apnea treatment. as another user said, devilbiss has given up. and i'm afraid we are going to be inundated with "low cost" machines from unproven sources.

respirator99 says-

"DeVilbiss have ceased making CPAP machines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXw3UwmHPc8

There are others, eg Fisher & Paykel, Lowenstein, etc. But I predict the market will be swamped with low cost Chinese machines such as BMC Luna etc. I can't see Philips remaining a major player after this, especially as word of their long-term cover up gets out. Philips' share price dropped by 11% overnight when the latest results were announced."

there are a LOT of potential sharks swimming out in that ocean and it's hard to get a resmed machine or pay the price for one.

just hope secondwind and others can keep up.

It is likely that every family has at least one member who has a cpap machine.
Most people don't talk about it, especially if they gave up, and the machine sits idle.
It is possible that if you knock on your neighbors' doors, you might find what you need.
Too many of us miss out on the neighbor experience--and it is just a short walk away.
