Discontinue machine use before sleep study? CSA

Post by silverpines » Thu Oct 07, 2021 5:26 pm

I was diagnosed with central sleep apnea several years ago. I’m having another lab sleep study in 10 days. I seem to recall that you’re supposed to discontinue using your machine about a week before a new study because central apnea has a memory and the results won’t be correct. Does anyone know if this is true? I’m on an ASV machine with an AHI of 16. Thank you.

I used to lurk on a sleep lab forum and I have seen the mention of people having some sort of hold over effect from using cpap when they have another sleep study. I was never able to see actual documentation though so I can't confirm or deny but enough people talked about it that I decided if I ever had to have another sleep study I would take a short break from machine use.....just in case.

If I remember right it was only a 3 to 4 day break though and not a full week.

Now I haven't looked for proof one way or another since then and maybe someone else here actually has and has the documentation available.

Why is it you are having another sleep study?

My doctor retired and the new one wants to do another study. I’ll ask the doc if taking a break before doing a new study is necessary.

So how do you feel? Do you feel like you need another sleep study or is the doc connected to the sleep lab and milking some money from you? Maybe time to keep looking.

IF it were me and I was feeling good and this is just to satisfy a new doc - I wouldn't do it.

If your DOCTOR tells you to stop, then do so.
If not, continue as normal.
You can call and ask what they recommend.

IMO unless you are having problems or complaints the doc should be happy with a copy of you other sleep study. Do you have a copy of your sleep study?

Your old doc, the sleep lab, and the DME ALL should have a copy if you don't - ask them for a copy.

another study.
I smell a doctor who wants to pump up revenue for his practice.

I would want to know exactly why the doctor thinks another study is necessary.
