Shortly after starting CPAP in April, I developed a serious problem with my left ear. The eardrum will get totally plugged by some type of liquid substance. It would partially drain at times, then fill back up again. The problem is so severe that I totally lose all hearing at times in that ear.
I finally got in to see an ENT last week, and he suspects a possible inner ear infection. He also said that such infections or plugged ears can be caused by CPAP pressure. My primary physician and my sleep doctor both told me that my ear problems were unrelated to CPAP use.
My concern is that the ENT told me that sometimes there is nothing that can be done. The patient has to decide whether he or she wants to go without hearing or without the benefits of CPAP therapy.
I quit using the humidifier and this seems to help somewhat. I use the Fisher & Paykel SleepStyle (which I purchased out of pocket in response to the DS1 recall), and I recently tried using the DS2 that I just received. The ear problem is the same regardless of which machine I use.
Has anyone had similar ear problems or any suggestions as to what I can do? I was put on antibiotic drops and have a follow up appointment with the ENT in two weeks.

Hi Steptoe,
Does your use of the avatar 'Steptoe' indicate that you live in the UK? (The tv show Steptoe and Son was re-made for the US, where it was called Sanford and Son.)
There is a condition which can be found in both adults and children called 'glue ear'. I don't know if this is what you have, but if it is at all similar then maybe some of what's said here will be helpful.

Re: CPAP & Ear Problems
I read the article that you referred me to. I think you nailed it. I have "glue ear." Oddly enough, the liquid substance in my ear is very similar to glue. My ENT didn't even mention this as a possibility. I am going to give him a copy of this article and will refer him to "Doctor" Rick Blaine for a professional consultation.
I live in the rolling hills of the Palouse in eastern Washington State in the USA, not the UK. "Steptoe Butte" is a landmark in the area which is a few miles from my home. Thus, I stole the name. Based on your diagnosis, though, I think I'll change my name in this forum to "Glue Ear."
Thanks for the help.
