Mouth Taping
Mouth Taping
Pugsy, I appreciate your response to my question about finding the perfect mask. I ordered the Bleep system and have watched the videos and spoken with Stuart. Thank you! So far, I’m doing well with it. Stuart recommended a mouth tape called Hypafix. I tried it but it was too harsh on my skin. I’m 65 with sensitive skin. I was using Somnifix, but it is fairly expensive. I like the idea of cloth tape. Any suggestions?
Re: Mouth Taping
Everyone is so different with their tape sensitivities that I usually just tell people to keep trying tape until they find one that suits them.
I haven't taped in years and when I did I used blue painters tape... cheap because I had it handy leftover from painting the kitchen and it worked and didn't bother my skin.
Tape preference is another one of the many things that come with the YMMV sticker.

Re: Mouth Taping
how about the scunci method, described at this link-
https://www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic.php? ... s#p1086296
scuncis are hairbands. i've been using this method, with alterations, for at least four years. no mouth leaks and no pesky adhesive to rip off in the morning.
if you want more details on the "alterations", just let me know.
whatever you decide, good luck!

Re: Mouth Taping
Hypafix has a gentle touch tape that may be better for you. Also consider using a skin barrier cream (Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream), a very small dab spread where you tape has been really good for me in avoiding the little red welts I was getting occasionally from tape removal.

Re: Mouth Taping
I was just watching a health and nutrition vidio and there was a
mention of mouth taping having nothing to do with cpap use. It
seems there are health benefits associated with only breathing
through your nose. So after using a full face mask for over 14 years
I am going to try using a nasal mask and taping. I am currently
using a Resmed Aircurve 10 Vauto set for a full face mask. Could
I still use it like that with a nasal mask just to try it out or must
I change the settings even for just a trial.

You appear happy and satisfied with FFMs.Woody wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 8:55 amSo after using a full face mask for over 14 years

Why not consider taping while using the FFM?
There are reports of people doing just so.
The nasal/FFM/ pillow setting appear to be primarily used for calculation of leaks.
IIRC I have read that the setting does seem to affect the functionality of AutoStart/AutoStop. If it is set to FFM while using nasal mask, it may not reliably start or stop.

Re: Mouth Taping
Mask setting most likely won't make any difference with anything that you notice.
I have trialed FFM with it set to pillows (because I forgot to change the settings) and never noticed anything.
Leak numbers might be slightly off but not enough for it to be a big deal.
Just for an experiment I wouldn't worry about it if it were me.

Re: Mouth Taping
For mouth taping I tried Somnifix but had a reaction to it. I now use 3M tape for sensitive skin (the tape is light blue) and have had no reaction to it.

Re: Mouth Taping
As Pugsy says, you just need to experiment to find the right tape for you. I use Somnifix over my lips and buttress it with BSN Medical Cover Roll Stretch. The roll is 4" x 10 yds and costs ten bucks. I always make a little folded-over tab to make it easy to pull the BSN tape off. It sticks a little harder than the Somnifix, and I'm not ready to try it on my lips, but who knows, it might work well for you as a substitute for the Somnifix.

Re: Mouth Taping
While I have tolerated using a full face mask I have never been
happy about my mask leaks. I found out that my biggest problem is
in my sleep I drop my chin to my chest and that ofton broke the
mask seal. Using a cervical collar helps this a great deal. But going
to a nasal mask and taping might be even better yet I was reluctant
to try it until I heard about the health benefits of taping in people
without sleep apnea.

Re: Mouth Taping
Recently, I switched from Somnifix to the much cheaper ihealth mouth tape - https://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Breathi ... ref=sr_1_6
It works as well for me (YMMV) and is easier to apply. You can try applying it like in the pic on the box. Or for a complete lip seal, using the Somnifix application directions is easy. I prefer the latter.
