No insurance, help!

Post by dwilmore » Mon Jul 05, 2021 7:02 pm

I joined this forum for info but before I jump in, I need some help determining if the info here would be useful.

Background: I've had SA for at least 20 years. Back then I had insurance and was able to do a sleep study and get a machine. Eventually, I got a new machine, but it's about 10 years old and no longer working well. I no longer have insurance! :( I can't afford a sleep study or a new machine.

I came across a site called easybreathe.com and called them. They can have someone evaluate you and give you a prescription to use on their site and then you can buy a machine. He said they have machines that will autoregulate for me and I can get on a payment plan.

I need to know if this is legit. Can I really get a new machine without a current sleep study? Will the machine know what levels to adjust to if I haven't had one? Hope this makes sense. I just don't want to buy a machine if I really do need a sleep study first. Thanks!

You can get them lots of places without a script, but try Secondwindcpap.com for starters - very legit, reliable, many here have bought from them.

Good idea and sometimes they will work with people who don't have an original RX when people are long term cpap veterans but I am sensing the OP here really needs someone who will work with him in regards to monthly payments.
Secondwindcpap.com will require all payment up front. They don't do any billing of any sort. Full payment due prior to shipment.

Too bad the OP wasn't here a couple of months ago...we had a couple of people wanting to just donate a machine to someone in need and no takers because of model or hours. No one was in real need so they were picky about things but sometimes even the S8 Elite with 4k hours is a great machine if it is free and works and a person doesn't have a machine and no way to go buy their own.

Hopefully tomorrow (if I have time) I am going to scour the past posts for those "free" machines and see if they are still available or not.

I appreciate that. I don't mind paying upfront since I saved our stimulus check. I will check out that website.

So, it's okay to get one even if he doesn't know what it should be programed to? Like, if we get a bipap, will it automatically adjust for his level?

With an auto pap and oscar software you can figure out your own best settings. We all sleep better at home and highly different from lab settings. Sleep studies are only a place to start. My settings are completely different from what the sleep study said.

Depends on the model of either apap/cpap or bilevel machine as to whether it has the ability to auto adjust or not and even when it does there are minimum pressure settings involved that are critical.
So you have to know your models and you have to use available software to figure out if your minimum needs to be higher or not.
These machines don't go from 4 cm to 12 cm in the blink of an eye. It takes some time and while it is taking its time the airway can close off. None of these machines that can auto adjust will actually do anything when the airway is closed off. They can't respond fast enough or with enough pressure to blow open the airway if it is obstructed. Doesn't work that way.

Preventing the airway collapse in the first place is what the goal is.

Just ask your dentist for a prescription--you do have a dentist, don't you?

Exactly what model/brand of machine were you using that up and died?
Do you know the pressure settings?
I may know of a couple of ResMed S9 machines that would work but need to know exactly what you had been using first.

So sorry I'm just now seeing your reply. I have the Phillips Respironics Sleep Easy.
