Machine mask settings

What exactly does the machine do differently when you change the mask settings? I'm just curious.

The manufacturer has not been specific about this. Some users have speculated:

"The ResMed interface setting is used by the machine to compensate for the differences in flow resistance of the various masks and in the calculation of unintentional leak."
