Dreamstation 2, (effectively) a brick???

Post by Dog Slobber » Wed Jun 23, 2021 8:16 am

A Brick is the colloquial term for A CPAP device that does not provide detail data.

While the DreamStation 2 does appear to still keep detail data, it appears that Philips has deliberately encrypted the data on the SD Card, so it can't be used by the end-user. It is effectively a Brick.

The linked document, DreamStation 2 CPAP/Auto CPAP Advance FAQ suggests as much:

  • Why can I not use a preprogramed SD card in multiple devices?

Philips has determined that as a company we must encrypt data for privacy and security reasons. When writing a prescription file to an SD Card using Care Orchestrator, such a file will be created for a specific target device that can decrypt the prescription and other files that were created by CareOrchestrator.
This is consistent with the OSCAR team's statement of having difficulty decoding the DreamStation 2 data:

The DS2 presents a much knottier problem as decoding the data is more difficult with the changes that Philips Respironics made to the data.
The ResMed 11 does not appear to be deliberately encrypting the data, as the OSCAR team is making great progress.

We are making great progress on adding support for the AirSense 11 since ResMed has apparently made only minor changes to the data files.
Just another reason to avoid DreamStation 2s, you may never get OSCAR support.

Yikes!
Just one bad decision after another.
When you are number 2, why try harder?--
Easier to channel your inner poop.
Or build the ultimate bedside turd . . .

I don't get it, without sleephead/oscar I would have returned my machine and likely died a whole lot sooner. They wouldn't have gotten more money out of me they would have gotten none. If I can't see my data and control my own machine, I don't want it.

But, the vision of an additional paywall was just too tempting.
When you are number two, it is expected to try harder, not fall on your sword.

In other news, Lifescan announced that blood-glucose readings on their devices would be encrypted and patients would no longer be able to see the readings. A spokesperson said, "Lifescan has determined that as a company we must encrypt data for privacy and security reasons."

Why go to Dr. $$$$ when you can bring your OSCAR data here to get recommendations on how to optimally tweak your CPAP settings for free. Encrypting the data will assuredly mean calling the doc if something seems amiss in your CPAP settings. Win, win for the medical 'pros' who want your $$$$ and who likely have more influence on the guys that make the equipment than the end user patients.

Kinda not too different from auto manufacturers disallowing auto repair shops and regular folks from having or being able to access data or information need to repair a vehicle so manufacturers and their own dealers can have a monopoly on the repair and tuneup end of the business.

And Medical devices as well.......

Nice example, granny.
I use my cpap data the same as my blood glucose readings.
If deprived of this life-saving data, I might get very, very upset.

Thanks to this board and the Oscar and prior versions of the program, I have learned more about my apnea that the two sleep doctors and DME I have seen appear to know. I once showed the sleep program to my current sleep doctor and he was amazed at what you could do. Locking down the data and clinical menus will keep me from ever buying a PR machine again.

Speaking of PR, I wonder if they will change anything in the repair or replacement of the recalled Dreamstations?

Just my worthless opinion, but "somebody" paid for the encryption paywall.
If Respironics removes it, that entity will want their money back.
