Is it okay to still use machine?
Is it okay to still use machine?
I was checking our backup xPAP machines the other day and found a problem with one of them (I check them every so often). If the electrical cord plugged into the back of the machine is somehow moved/jiggled around, the machine sometimes cuts off and then cuts back on. Now, I don't go tugging on my machine at night to where that would happen in my sleep, but I'm still wondering if it's safe to use it this way. Not knowing anything at all about electrical, didn't know if there might be some sort of short or other problem that could cause a fire, etc. Thanks!

If jiggling caused fires, an awful lot of us would be fried!
Don't worry about it, maybe a little duct tape would help steady it though.

Worst thing to happen is that you would lose power and the machine would turn off,

If you have the DC power cord for this cpap I would use that.

Re: Is it okay to still use machine?
Unlikely to short or cause a fire.
I've had success firming up loose laptop connectors, which are often the same or similar to the CPAP power connector by gently moving the pin.
I can't find a good closeup of the RemStar 60 (assuming your backup is the same as your main), so hoping this applies.
Depending on connector, you will likely find a single pin in the center. With a set of needle nose pliers gently move the pin off-center, just a bit. If you're working on the cable-side connector make sure it's unplugged. Then gently push the connector back into the CPAP. Feel for resistance when plugging it back in. You don't want the pin to be too off-center, so as to break it off or bend it over.
You want the pin to be sufficiently off-center, to put firmer pressure on the side of the connector. It may take a few tries. When your done, don't leave the connector in your backup, as this can contribute to it straightening up again.
Also worth noting, assuming your backup and and main machine is the manufacturer, the power supply *might* be compatible and interchangeable. Keep that in mind, should you ever have to use your backup.

Re: Is it okay to still use machine?
I would also check the wall outlet where the machine is plugged in. Often these do not hold the plug tight and could result in what you are describing.

Re: Is it okay to still use machine?
I was fairly confident it was the electrical plug going into the machine rather than the wall outlet part. But did check it at more than one wall outlet to make sure. And the machine moving (or my jiggling the cord going into the machine) is what sometimes causes the issue even if the wall outlet plug doesn't have any movement.
