Does the Dream Station know when I'm asleep?

Post by kjbarr914 » Fri May 28, 2021 8:58 am

I have a Dream Station 2 which is currently not compatible with OSCAR so I only have the information from the machine.

The DreamStation gives me an AHI in the morning but I don't think it can tell if I'm asleep or awake. it seems like the AHI is calculated based on the amount of time I wear the mask, regardless of if i'm sleeping or not.

So if I put on the mask and it takes me an hour to fall asleep and then I'm awake in the middle of the night for an hour (typical for me), the machine is counting those two hours as sleeping hours with zero apneas, which would give an articifically low AHI.

My DreamStation AHI is typically around 5.

Is it correct that the AHI is based on total wear time, not sleep time??

None of these machine have any way to know if we are asleep or awake.

AHI calculated is based on the time the machine was on...and it can and will often include awake flagged events because awake breathing is irregular and the machine only measures air flow. Of course anything flagged while awake doesn't count though. You must be asleep for it to matter. It's called sleep apnea and not awake apnea for a reason.

So lame. Apple Watch, fitbit etc is pretty accurate in recording sleep/wake - seems like it would not be hard to develop a cpap machine with a simple wristband component.

Those reports are based on algorithms based on input from an accellerometer.
They ASSume your physical movements coordinate with your sleep stages.
This is close enough for "recreational use".
A real sleep study uses input from leads on your head, which indicate brain activity.
Sleep labs do not use toys for instruments.

My comment was not regarding sleep studies. The apple watch data is fairly accurate and routinely used for clinical research purposes. It's certainly better than the sleep/wake data collected by my CPAP machine, which is zero.

I do not want a cheap half-ass component in addition to everything I already have to deal with to keep my apnea under control(hose, mask, gag, etc)

Oscar is much better once you learn how to use it.

You will just have to wait until Bluedragon and the good people who work on Oscar get your machine compatible or purchase a machine that is.
Could use it as a backup later.

Do you mind citing a source to support your claim?

I take the FitBit sleep data with a grain of salt. I had one that once told me I was sound asleep when I know for a fact I was up taking the dog out to pee. They are good but far from perfect.

EEG leads are still the gold standard for measuring sleep status.

Fitbits are TOYS.
The biggest tip-off is the fact they are only designed to be worn VISIBLY on the wrist,
often the least accurate place when one is walking or running.
They are intended to be a FASHION ACCESSORY.
The makers use social pressure to sell their lame crap.
You only THINK they work because you bought the hype.
Any lab that uses TOYS for instruments is beyond shady--to be avoided at all costs.

watching breathing is more accurate than an gadget on you wrist, which only *guesses* at whether you're awake or asleep.

There's a reason that those are just expensive toys.
