Settings for type of mask

Post by sleepyone101 » Thu May 06, 2021 12:26 pm

For the settings on my cpap machine, I was told that I could select pillows for the airfit N30i nasal mask since they are similar to pillows. What effect does selecting the mask type on the cpap machine have in general?

Wouldn’t the n30i be “nasal”, hence the “N”?

In the N30 user manual it says select pillows. Someone smarter than I CA explain why.

Not necessarily does the N mean that a person should use the Nasal choice. The choice has more to do with the inherent resistance in the mask than anything else. Some nasal masks have a resistance more in line with the pillow masks than with the tradition over the nose cushion nasal masks.....seems to be especially true of the masks that have the under the nose cradle cushion.

For ResMed masks people should look at the paperwork that comes with the mask because that paperwork will tell people which setting to use and there are some like the N30 that do say to select pillows.

Some minor effect with leak reporting numbers and minor air flow adjustment so it can deliver the selected pressure because of the inherent resistance in the mask and that's about it.

Ah so I’ve had mine on the wrong one. I forgot about the over the nose type nasal masks. I can see how day the dream wisp and the dreamwear nasal would offer different resistance. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

As Pugsy says, these are *minor* differences, but Resmed just wants to get the pressure "just right".

I've measured the machine vs mask pressure with a differential manometer and the different mask type settings do make a *small* (less than one cm) pressure difference, nothing like selecting the wrong hose type. When I first got my machine, I thought it was broken, because it had noticeably more pressure than my previous one did, then I checked and I'd forgotten to change the hose setting from slimline to regular, *that* made a big difference. :)
