It's been around ten years since I got my last cpap machine. The prescription back then didn't say how long that it's good for, so would I likely need a new prescription if I want to get a new cpap machine through my insurance? I still have a copy of the prescription and I didn't see an expiration date or any time period listed on it.
I had a tough go around back then cause the sleep doctor automatically wrote the prescription specifically for a bare bones machine that the dme supplied to the sleep lab. The dme visited the sleep lab while I was there and had it already picked out for me. I told them that I didnt want that cpap machine, and the doctor had to change the prescription to "CPAP" and my pressure setting. The dme at the sleep lab said that they didn't have the particular cpap machine that I was looking for so I went to a different dme location. The next dme told me that since the prescription said CPAP and not APAP, that I would be charged an upgrade fee if I wanted an auto cpap and that he would put the Auto CPAP in CPAP mode. I told him that it was illegal to be charged an upgrade fee for my medicare insurance and he quickly said that he would waive the fee. It was a frustating situation.

Re: CPAP prescription questions
I've just found (through CPAP.COM) that the way my prescription (written last September) is worded prevents me from utilizing it to order a new APAP machine (a backup for me..). Or any machine, for that matter. So for me it's time to get another prescription from the doctor. It was all about how and in what order the pressures were presented; and the fact that both CPAP and APAP were on the document.

Re: CPAP prescription questions
My prescription is over 11 years old and Crapria still uses it. Heck, the doctor that wrote the the prescription is since passed away, and the prescription is still valid. Always keep a copy of your prescription and your sleep study.
